Jill is Brill.

Today (Friday 12th June) we were proud to open our doors and welcome local football legend Jill Scott MBE to Farringdon Community Fire Station in Sunderland.

Jill was in the region during the final leg of her enduring ‘Coming Home Challenge’, which is raising money for 2026.

The gruelling journey of 388-miles has seen the former Queen of the Jungle and England footballing star run and cycle from Wembley Stadium through to the finish line at the Stadium of Light.

Crews, TWFRS colleagues, volunteers, and attendees from the The King's Trust TEAM programme gave Jill and her team a massive Northeast welcome as they enjoyed a pitstop at Farringdon before making their way onto Sunderland’s Premiership home ground.

Our Future is in Safe Hands 👩‍🚒

Can we get a like for Harrison, aged 3, of Slatyford, Newcastle. 👍

Harrison is a TWFRS super fan and wants to be a firefighter when he’s older. We can’t wait to welcome him into our firefighter family. He spotted one of our crews from West Denton Community Fire Station out in the local community attending an incident and stopped them to ask for a few helpful tips. 🚒

The next step for Harrison will be to join one of our Fire Cadet programmes that are held weekly at Gateshead, Marley Park, South Shields, Tynemouth and West Denton Community Fire Stations. They are aimed at young people aged between 11-17.

A link to information about the Fire Cadets can be found in the comments section below 👇

Harrison we wish you luck for your future career! 🧡

A big thank you to Jonathan Klajn from the Jewish Community Council of Gateshead for delivering a fantastic Cultural Awareness session at our HQ.

Our teams gained valuable insight into religious, cultural and family life in Orthodox Jewish communities.

Sessions such as these help build stronger relationships, improve communication, and keep everyone in Tyne and Wear safer.

⚽ Planning to enjoy the FIFA World Cup? Think before you drive.

Young people from across Tyne & Wear have joined forces with Road Safety GB NE Region and the region’s emergency services to help keep people safe on the roads during the tournament.

New figures have revealed that last year a quarter of road fatalities in our region involved a drink or drug driver, the highest level in five years.

Between 2021 and 2025, eighteen lives were tragically lost across Tyne & Wear due to drivers being under the influence. 💔

No match, no celebration, and no journey home is worth that risk.
🚫 If you’re drinking or taking drugs, don’t drive.
✅ Plan ahead. Book a taxi, use public transport, or choose a designated driver.

Let’s make this World Cup a time to celebrate safely - and make sure everyone gets home.

Meet Roy 👋

As part of Volunteers Week 2026 we are providing people with a special insight into what it means to volunteer for TWFRS. 🚒

Roy has been associated with the emergency services for all of his life, and he has a lovely story to tell.

This we’re proud to recognise the incredible contribution that our volunteers make to the Service and the local community.

Over the past year, 77 volunteers have given more than 2,000 hours of their time, supporting over 300 events, activities and training sessions. That is the equivalence of nearly 23 football matches.

From supporting our operational crews and improving community safety to inspiring young people, their impact is felt across everything we do.

This week, we’ll also be sharing posts from the National Fire Chiefs Council - NFCC highlighting the amazing work of fire service volunteers across the country, to celebrate the wider impact volunteers make every day, and also case studies featuring our very own heroes from Tyne & Wear.

📺 From the TWFRS video vault: Take a moment to watch and listen to Ron Monaghan’s volunteer story as he talks about volunteering with the Fire Cadets and during the open days.

Thank you to every one of our volunteers for your dedication, professionalism and commitment to keeping our communities safe. If you've ever aspired to volunteer for TWFRS then the application link is provided below.
