Do you have a passion for animals, conservation and people?
We are continuing the recruitment drive to grow our Parks and Green Space Ranger Service.

We are seeking to recruit two Grazing & Livestock Rangers to support the delivery of conservation grazing across the city’s parks, open spaces and nature reserves.

As part of Birmingham’s commitment as the UK’s first accredited Nature City, and delivery of the City of Nature 25-Year Plan, conservation grazing plays a vital role in enhancing biodiversity, improving habitats and maintaining our landscapes.
Working as part of the Ranger Service, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management, welfare and handling of livestock across a range of sites.

This is a practical, hands-on role requiring experience, confidence and a strong commitment to animal welfare and environmental management.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage the daily care, welfare and handling of livestock
• Deliver conservation grazing programmes across multiple sites
• Monitor animal health and liaise with veterinary professionals where required
• Maintain fencing, infrastructure and grazing areas
• Support habitat management and biodiversity objectives
• Engage with members of the public to promote understanding of conservation grazing
• Supervise volunteers and support community involvement

About You
You will have:
• Proven experience working with livestock in a practical setting
• Knowledge of animal welfare standards and relevant legislation
• Confidence handling large animals in varied environments
• An understanding of conservation grazing and habitat management
• Good communication skills and the ability to engage with the public
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team

A relevant qualification in agriculture, countryside management or a related field is desirable.

Many of our long term followers will remember the excitement on site when several years ago a pair of raven took up residence within the park. Last year was the first year we were able to confirm successful breeding with the wonderful sight of a single fledgling. This year has been even better and we currently have three fledglings moving around the park with their parents; a glorious winged cahcophany of kronks, kracs, and klacs! Pictured is one of the fledglings doing its level best to get airborne above Blackroot Bistro having been disturbed, along with its siblings, from the surrounding trees.

Hopefully we’ll have some better pictures to follow of the whole family group!

As promised several days ago one of our rangers returned to the bee orchids!

Interestingly within the British Isles this species of orchid, due to the lack of its preferred pollinator, relies heavily upon self pollination. The second picture showing this process in action with one of the paired stalked balls of pollen, the pollinia, curving down and backwards to make contact with the female part of the flower!

For many years the wonderful team from BrumBats have been conducting bat surveys, walks, research, as well as practical conservation sessions across the park. As a result of this partnership they have dramatically increased our knowledge of how bats utilise the different landscapes within the park. Last night the rangers were delighted to not only host them but also 14 of their Swedish counterparts from BatLife Sweden who are visiting the midlands to observe how chiropterological studies are carried out within the British urban environment. Lots of mosquitoes, lots of bats, and a lovely opportunity to meet lots of wonderful new people!

We are, in the park, so very lucky to have so many wonderful people who are willing to come together to dedicate spare time to projects across the park. We have both informal and formal volunteers who work away, often unseen by the public, and without which the work of those employed within the park would be that much harder. Today we thought we would highlight and thank the FoSPA conservation team who carry out a number of practical tasks across the park throughout the year in all weathers and who’s work is vital in the sensitive management of habitats and has for decades supported the larger scale projects carried out by parks staff.

As many of you will be aware our rangers cover parks and green spaces across not only Sutton Coldfield but also Erdington and Perry Barr. As a consequence of this they come across all sorts of things in all sorts of places. One such example is a small colony of bee orchids growing next to an incredibly busy car park right in the middle of the Royal Town. Bee orchids are a fairly rare site in urban areas but can appear on freshly disturbed brown field sites in large numbers. Bee orchids have a rosette growth habit which means, like dandelion and hawkweeds, they can grow well even in areas that are mown on a regular basis. This particular colony is spread between two neighbouring patches of grass. One patch gets cut occasionally a little too early though in most years not before the plants have had a chance to set seed, the other patch is kept free of competing plant growth due to its slope and exposed dry conditions; and is never cut. We will return next week and photograph the flowers once they have emerged from their buds!
