St Mary's Church, Houghton on the Hill

St Mary's Church, Houghton on the Hill The church of St. Mary, Houghton-on-the-Hill, Norfolk. Home to one of the most complete sets of 11th century medieval wall paintings in England.

Towards the end of the twentieth century the village of Houghton-on-the-Hill and its church had almost dwindled to nothing more than a few lumps and bumps and a ruin. However, thanks to funding from several government bodies, numerous charities and private donations, together with the enthusiasm and hard work of The Friends of St Mary’s, the site has experienced a startling renaissance. Visitors f

rom many parts of the world come to see the remarkable wall paintings, to worship at the church or to appreciate its beautiful setting

Yesterday, Saturday 5th September, we held our ninth and last concert of the 2026 season with a performance by the Guildhall Singers of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk. They gave us a magnificent performance of a variety of songs from Thomas Tallis to Ralph Vaughan Williams, all beautifully sung a ca****la. The audience were able to enjoy the sunshine during the interval. Thank you Guildhall Singers and special thanks to Kate Gordon for organising such an inspiring programme of summer music.

We were very pleased to welcome Ben Creighton Griffiths - Music to St Mary's yesterday after an epic journey back from Corsica. We were blessed with a fine afternoon for his concert. What a difference from last year when Ben played bravely through a ferocious thunderstorm. Yesterday a packed church was treated to some delightful jazz which sounds quite wonderful when played on the harp. Many thanks Ben.
