Along with physical therapists, osteopaths or a chiropractor can offer some serious help.⠀

However, keep in mind that with any provider who performs manipulation, make sure they are very aware of your hypermobility and understand that you need gentle and not aggressive techniques.

Over the years, many patients have come to my practice with one idea on their heads: sit-ups and crunches are great core strengthening exercises. ⠀

Can someone hypermobile do sit-ups and crunches?⠀

The short and simple answer is, NO. You can't do them now, and you can't do them six months from now. ⠀

Yes, even if you have good form and technique. It's just TOO hard on your back. ⠀

So what could a hypermobile person do to strengthen their core instead? ⠀

The only way to do sit-ups and crunches as a hypermobile person would be while hanging off of a bar. However, I would recommend finding core strengthening exercises where you move your legs and use your arms instead. ⠀

Remember, it's all about your back and neck being supported.

Are you fighting your own body?

This usually means something is not right and that what you are trying to do is not agreeing with your system. Sometimes you may be doing all the things you are supposed to do to make you feel better, but unfortunately is not working.

Try the following initial steps and let me know how it goes:

✅ Try to identify what that is, listen to your body, and start paying attention. Is it your posture? Are you standing incorrectly? Are you overusing your muscles?
✅ You may find it hard to adjust patterns, so try to use a mirror or have a co-worker film you while you lift something, when you are standing or sitting at work.
