Visiting with your dog in warmer weather ☀️🐾
We know your four-legged friends enjoy adventures at Durlston and everyone’s routine looks a little different at the moment in the heat. When the weather warms up, a few changes can help keep your dog happy and comfortable.

If you’re planning a visit, we recommend:
🌅 Heading out early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
🌳 Sticking to shaded routes where possible
💧 Bringing plenty of fresh water (for you and your dog) (we have a free water refill station near the Castle)
🐶 Taking it easy and taking a slow paced walk
❗️And if it’s feeling too hot, plan your visit for another, cooler time.

There’s still plenty to enjoy together – it’s all about making the most of those cooler moments 💙

A lovely sunny morning for a patrol across the National Nature Reserve, a change from the thick fog of late. The wonderful sight of some Swallows swooping low and then high above the grasses, their feathers a dark blue as they went, was accompanied by the chittering call of a flock of Long-tailed Tits which were hanging and flitting about the Hawthorn hedgerow.

A fluttering of wings and a Painted Lady butterfly landed almost at my feet, very smart in its orange, white and black markings. As I continued more butterflies spotted including the wonderful black and white Marbled Whites (some of our first of the year), the two-tone Meadow Brown and Small Heaths. Nearby a stunning Adonis Blue as well as the more lilac Common Blue and the tiny silvery Small Blue. read more on our daily dairy on our website

As I sat on this glorious morning by the Globe, a Rabbit bounded into the Bramble scrub, a Lesser Whitethroat emerged from the top, while I also had the delight of watching Common Whitethroats, Chaffinches and Chiffchaffs as they busied themselves feeding their chicks. read more from the Daily Diary on our website

As I headed out to the downland, the sky was grey and overcast, but from it came the wonderful fluid song of a Skylark. After a long search I eventually spotted the Skylark, a tiny dot wavering below the clouds.
The tall stems of Wild Clary topped with a purple flower head, alongside the pale green heads of the Wall Barley, one of the many grasses identified including Crested Dog’s Tail, False Oat Grass, Yorkshire Fog, Timothy and Quaking Grass, all such different shapes as the ‘flowers’ open up.
