By the Observation Point, the sound of the sea gently lapping at the Portland limestone was interrupted by the growling gargle of the Guillemots which were scattered across the water, dark brown and white, some turning over as they washed, other bobbing up and down, a few diving down and others taking flight – wings whirring and feet splashing as lift off happened.

Yesterday’s butterfly transect saw 14 species, including 4 types of Skipper – Dingy, Small, Large and quite a few Lulworth. A couple of Painted Ladies, a Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Wall Brown and what looked like an unusually small sized Ringlet – the chocolate colour and cream rings on the underside spotted. I was also surprised to see two Meadow Browns, a butterfly I normally expect in June

A flash of brilliant blue and an Adonis Blue butterfly moved by, just above the low growing Horseshoe Vetch and larger yellow flowers of Bird’s-foot Trefoil. This spotted a I went to check on the Hereford cows and calves in field 3 (at the western end of Durlston) read more of my diary on the durlston website
