Mumbles Community Council

Mumbles Community Council Mumbles Community Council working together to represent the people of Mumbles. The main instigator, Mr. Victor Carney, together with Mrs. Val Bevan, Mrs.

In 1889 Oystermouth Urban District Council was established and was responsible for local administration until it voted in 1918 to hand over its powers to Swansea. It ceased to exist in 1923 and Oystermouth and Mumbles came under the direct control of Swansea. Many in the area regretted the loss of administrative autonomy, so, when the opportunity arose in the 1980’s, there was wide support for the

establishment of a Community Council. Peggy Jones, Mr. Maurice Edwards and Mr. Werner Sivertson, amongst others, campaigned hard to bring this about. They were successful and in 1983 Mumbles Community Council came into being under the Chairmanship of Werner Sivertson. The first Clerk to the Council, Mr. Peter Douglas – Jones was succeeded by Mrs. Liz Taylor, Mr. John Pickard (who held the post for 15 years) and Mr. Alastair Wilson. The present Clerk is Mr. Steve Heydon. At first, Mumbles Community Council led a peripatetic existence, holding its meetings in various schools and halls, until it leased an office in Walters Crescent in April 1997. The Community Council wards and the number of councillors for each are Mayals (3), Newton (4), Oystermouth (5) and West Cross (6). Over the years, they have worked together to represent the people of Mumbles, support local organisations, improve the street scene and the environment and provide enhanced services. The work of the Council is funded by the precept – a relatively small amount paid by domestic council tax payers to enable the Community Council to carry out its work. Large projects, such as the improvements around Bracelet Bay, have been delivered through working arrangements with the City and County of Swansea; such agreements are likely to increase in the future as more powers are devolved to community councils.

Today, we launch a wonderful community initiative in honour of Loneliness Awareness Week. 💛

Inspired by the idea that kindness spreads further when shared, Spreading a Little Kindness brings together connection, conversation and community care.

Building on the established success of West Cross Caffi, the initiative encourages neighbours to connect through community postcards, an invitation to join a welcoming weekly café space, and the sharing of surplus food that might otherwise go to waste.

Sometimes a simple hello, a shared cuppa, or a small act of kindness can make someone feel seen, valued and included.

Join us every Thursday at West Cross Caffi and help us build a community where everyone belongs.

Thursdays | 10am–12pm | Baywood Community Centre, West Cross, SA3 5LP You are very welcome here!

Mumbles Community Council Sustainability Day with our Hennebont Visitors 🩵💚💛

We were delighted to welcome our visitors from Hennebont for a Sustainability Day showcasing some of the inspiring environmental and community initiatives taking place across our area.

Our first visit was to Gower Lavender, a thriving local business that operates according to strong sustainability principles. We learned about the history of the enterprise, the production process behind its products, and saw first-hand how their soaps are cut, dried, and prepared for packaging. Visitors were also introduced to the ingenious lavender threshing machine before heading into the fields to help plant lavender seedlings. With 4,000 seedlings to plant, there was plenty of opportunity to get involved!

At lunchtime, Emeritus Professor Prys Morgan, former President of the Twinning Association of Mumbles, generously hosted us at his historic home in Bishopston. Lunch was provided by The Shared Plate, whose delicious menu made use, wherever possible, of ingredients that might otherwise have gone to waste. The quality of the food was greatly appreciated by all.

The afternoon was spent at Down to Earth, where Director Mark McKenna MBE gave an engaging presentation on the organisation's history, mission, and commitment to sustainability. Visitors then took part in a hands-on workshop, creating their own pyrographed wooden keepsakes to take home.

The day concluded with dinner at Bristol Channel Yacht Club. Rebecca delivered a welcome address on behalf of Mumbles Community Council, while Conseiller Patrick Eliot spoke on behalf of the Mayor of Hennebont, highlighting the importance of the long-standing friendship and partnership between our communities.

The day was a tremendous success, providing opportunities to share ideas, learn from one another, and celebrate the innovative approaches to sustainability being developed in both Mumbles and Hennebont. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the day such an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Sometimes, the heaviest things can be lifted by the lightest gestures. You don’t have to feel lonely 💛

Loneliness doesn't always wear a sad face; sometimes it’s just waiting quietly for a friendly voice. This Loneliness Awareness Week, let’s give loneliness a voice by breaking the silence.

You don’t need a grand gesture to heal a lonely heart. A simple "How are you really doing?", a wave across the fence, or a quick text can be the tiny spark that brightens someone's entire week.

This week please:
✨ Check in on your friends.
✨ Reach out to your family.
✨ Say hello to your neighbours.

Let's make sure nobody in our beautiful Mumbles community feels invisible. It starts with one small connection.

Please know that you can pop along to our weekly classes at the Ostreme centre and Underhill Park, you would be very welcome. Volunteering with us is also a wonderful way to connect with others and brighten your day!

This Loneliness Awareness Week, let’s make an extra effort to connect.

A simple smile, a warm “hello,” to a stranger. A quick check-in with a friend, family member, or neighbour ~ it could mean the world to someone! You never truly know what others are going through, a small act of kindness goes a long way. ✨
