Enjoy the sunshine, but stay safe around open water💧

Please take extra care around lakes, rivers and ponds. Water can be much colder and deeper than it looks, even on the warmest days.

Suddenly entering cold water can cause cold water shock, which can affect your breathing and quickly become dangerous.

✅ Keep a safe distance from the water’s edge
✅ Supervise children and pets closely at all times
❌ Don’t enter the water or attempt to swim in unsupervised locations

A proposal to secure the future of the Council’s community alarm and response service, Homeline, will be discussed by councillors next week (1 July).

Homeline currently supports more than 3,000 residents to stay safe and independent at home. Under the proposed approach, the service would continue to offer 24/7 monitoring and an in-person response, but with enhanced clinical support to better meet increasingly complex needs.

The review follows feedback from residents and a public consultation, which gathered more than 1,000 responses. There was strong support for keeping the service, particularly its in-person response.

The new model would be delivered in partnership with the local Integrated Care Board, helping to improve links with health services, including falls response and urgent community care.

If approved, further work will begin on consulting with tenants, as the service may become opt-in, so council tenants only pay if they choose it.

There will be no immediate changes to the service while plans are developed but we cannot accept new customers at this time.

Some football fans might not love the hydration breaks at the World Cup...⚽

But when temperatures soar, they're there to help keep players safe.

With a red weather warning in place until 9pm tomorrow (25 June), it's worth taking a leaf out of their book and staying hydrated.

With another hot day ahead and a Red weather warning for extreme heat in place across the South West, please take extra care if you're spending time outdoors.

While many people will be looking for ways to keep cool, hot weather can affect anyone and may have a greater impact on older people, young children and those with long-term health conditions.

Remember to:

☀️ stay hydrated and carry water with you
🧴 apply sunscreen regularly and cover up where possible
🏠 keep your home cool by closing curtains and blinds in sunny rooms
👵 check in on older relatives, neighbours and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat

If you're heading to a lake, river or other open water to cool off, be aware that water temperatures can be much colder than they appear and hidden hazards may be present. Only swim where it is safe and never enter the water after drinking alcohol.

With the hot, dry conditions, please also take extra care with fire safety. Disposable BBQs are not permitted in any of our country parks and open flames can quickly cause serious damage to grassland, wildlife and public spaces.

Despite the challenging conditions, Council services are continuing to operate as normal. There is currently some disruption to library services while refurbishment work takes place at West Swindon Library, so if you're planning to visit a library, please check our service disruption page for the latest information.

We'd also like to thank all of our frontline teams who are working throughout the heat, including waste and recycling crews, highways teams, parks staff, community teams and many others who continue to deliver vital services for residents.

Is it hot enough to fry an egg on the pavement? 🥚

Honestly, we don't recommend finding out...

On hot days, pavements, roads and artificial grass can be 20°C or more hotter than the temperature shown on your weather app, which isn't great news for paws, bare feet or anyone spending long periods outdoors.

If you can, try to walk dogs and head out for exercise earlier in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. The hottest part of the day is usually between 11am and 3pm, so it's worth planning ahead if you're spending time outside.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly.

West Swindon Library will temporarily close from tomorrow (24 June) for essential repair and upgrade works ahead of becoming part of the Council's network of Community Hubs.

The current library will temporarily close and a reduced service will operate from an upstairs room within the Link Centre from 30 June onwards. The temporary service will continue to offer book borrowing and returns. Public-use computers, Wi-Fi and related services will be temporarily unavailable but will resume following the completion of the refurbishment works.

Library members will continue to be able to access free eBooks and eAudiobooks, reserve items online and use other library branches across the borough.

When refurbishment is completed, the Library service will return to its current space and be included in the Council’s network of Community Hubs. The existing Community Hub at Park Library has already helped more than 150 residents and provides a welcoming space where people can access information, signposting and support in one place, including employment and skills , housing and homelessness prevention, welfare and financial wellbeing and access to council services and partner organisations.

Work is due to be completed by the end of the year. Thank you for your patience and understanding while these improvements take place

Not everything belongs in your recycling 🔋

Batteries should never be put in your wheelie bin or blue bag. When damaged, they can pose a fire risk during waste collection and processing.

With the current hot and dry weather, it's especially important to dispose of batteries correctly, as fires can spread more quickly and be more difficult to control.

Please recycle used batteries at designated collection points, including most supermarkets, or take them to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The photo shows a previous fire incident at the Household Waste Recycling Centre which was suspected to have been caused by batteries being disposed of incorrectly.

For more information on how to recycle different items, search ‘Waste Wizard’ on our website.
