Kingshill Air Quality Action Plan Update

Cllr Stan Pajak reports “After being contacted by residents in the Kingshill area about the air quality, I can report back that traffic restrictions for certain vehicles are hoped to be introduced in 2022/23.

Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK. Long term exposure can cause chronic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease and lung cancer. The biggest threat is the presence of nitrogen dioxide. A section of Kingshill close to its junction with Okus Road is not compliant due to having too high levels of this gas recorded.

An Air Quality Management Area has been declared and an Air Quality Action Plan created, the deadline to bring this to acceptable levels is 2024. The two key priorities of the Plan are to reduce traffic flow particularly uphill and to create a shift to more sustainable modes of traffic and more sustainable fuels.”

Stan, who was a member of the Kingshill task group, continued “The results of monitoring air quality are currently showing nitrogen dioxide levels are meeting the required level. This, however, follows the reduction in traffic levels due to COVID, to help reduce this lorry usage restrictions will be introduced.

Plans to upgrade and therefore encourage use of the Old Town Railway Path have started.

There will be promotions for active travel such as walking, cycling and public transport, such as talking to the bus companies to increase the number and frequency of service.

In mid 2022 we should be able to update nitrogen dioxide levels for this year and report back.”

Writing is on the wall for Graffiti

Stan Pajak says “In recent times we have suffered an explosion in the amount of graffiti and tags that have been daubed on walls in our area.

They disfigure our community and town centre but most people are unaware that Swindon Council will remove graffiti from their property for free using high pressure washing or over painting when there could be damage to the surface if washed.

For this help either complete the online form on www.swindon.gov.uk which includes a disclaimer for any damage caused or contact me and I will give you the necessary paperwork to complete”

Stan Pajak said “An alternative to cleaning action by the council is the painting of a mural or street art which adds to our local scene. The owner of house in Belle Vue road paid for an amazing mural by local artist Sarah Harris to transform his continually graffiti daubed wall.” Want to know more about Sarah creating a mural for your home or business? Not Going Down the Drain

A survey by Stan Pajak of blocked drains in the Kingshill area revealed a staggering 28 blocked drains which he has reported to the Council

Stan armed with a bamboo found ten in Kingshill alone followed by 4 in Bowood Road and Exmouth Street.

Stan says “Blocked drains can be a real problem to residents and need to be cleaned out.

I will be doing the other areas of Eastcott in the coming weeks.”

If you know of any blocked drains in your area please contact Stan and he will help you by reporting them.

Stan Fights for Museum

Stan Pajak objects to the closure of the Museum

Stan Pajak has condemned Swindon Borough Council’s disgraceful proposal to close the Old Town Museum and Art Gallery.

The South Swindon Parish Council, of which Stan Pajak is a member, has proposed an alternative to the closure.

The Parish would take over the museum, which would keep it open and to move the Old Town Library to the building following renovations.

As we go to press a formal response to the excellent offer has yet to be received. Indeed, Swindon Council officers failed to turn up to the first arranged meeting between the councils!

Stan said “The Tory led Borough Council’s proposal, which has rightly been met by protests by residents, is a disaster for our area. I will continue to campaign for the Museum and Art Gallery to remain in Bath Road until the new proposed state of the art building is created as part of the town centre redevelopment.”
