Kingshill Air Quality Action Plan Update
Cllr Stan Pajak reports “After being contacted by residents in the Kingshill area about the air quality, I can report back that traffic restrictions for certain vehicles are hoped to be introduced in 2022/23.
Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK. Long term exposure can cause chronic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease and lung cancer. The biggest threat is the presence of nitrogen dioxide. A section of Kingshill close to its junction with Okus Road is not compliant due to having too high levels of this gas recorded.
An Air Quality Management Area has been declared and an Air Quality Action Plan created, the deadline to bring this to acceptable levels is 2024. The two key priorities of the Plan are to reduce traffic flow particularly uphill and to create a shift to more sustainable modes of traffic and more sustainable fuels.”
Stan, who was a member of the Kingshill task group, continued “The results of monitoring air quality are currently showing nitrogen dioxide levels are meeting the required level. This, however, follows the reduction in traffic levels due to COVID, to help reduce this lorry usage restrictions will be introduced.
Plans to upgrade and therefore encourage use of the Old Town Railway Path have started.
There will be promotions for active travel such as walking, cycling and public transport, such as talking to the bus companies to increase the number and frequency of service.
In mid 2022 we should be able to update nitrogen dioxide levels for this year and report back.”
