Could someone's tears help detect a brain tumour? 💧

It might sound surprising, but scientists believe tear fluid could hold vital clues about what’s happening deep inside the brain.

Professor Petra Hamerlik, whose own father died from a brain tumour, is leading research that could change the way we diagnose the disease.

Her team developed a test that can accurately detect brain tumours in tears and now, with support from our Stand Up To Cancer UK campaign, she’s leading a large study to see if it could become a tool for GPs.

This study is powered by the generosity of people like Alex, a devoted dad and husband from Bolton. Alex has glioblastoma, a fast-growing type of brain tumour. He donated his tears to help make this research possible.

‘’If by helping with this research it could mean that someone like me can be diagnosed sooner, it offers real hope for the future,” he said.

This could be a game-changer for early diagnosis, and for families facing the unknown.

At times like this, community is more important than ever. And we stand firm in our mission to help anyone, anywhere who needs our support.
Where we see division, we also see compassion – people standing together, neighbours helping one another, and a strong sense of togetherness. ❤️

Hey there, wonderful community! 🌟

We’re excited to share a bit about what’s happening at the Liden Library and Community Hub! Our dedicated Trust members – Eileen, David, Gary, and Bazil – are always on the go, meeting with residents and engaging with the hundreds of library users each month. It’s all about people participatory democracy, and we couldn’t do it without your input! 👏

Every year, we find ourselves in need of a little extra help to raise funds for the library. Whether it’s support from the council, local businesses, or generous individuals like you, every contribution counts! 💷

We’re also proud to collaborate with fantastic charities like VAS, as well as our lovely volunteers and the amazing team at Radio 105.5. We might be in a rather chilly, poorly insulated building, but we’re keeping the spirit warm! 📻

Here’s what else we’re up to: We host a weekly warm space where the elderly can come enjoy tea, and we have a special storytime for the kids. Plus, we offer computer and WiFi facilities, and our delightful tea and cake sales counter is always a hit! 😀

Our Trustee member, Cllr Bazil Solomon, who also chairs the South African Association, is actively involved in running the Eastmere and Liden Lagoon Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (number 000177685). If you have concerns about anti-crime, anti-racism, EDI, or any anti-social issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to him at [email protected]. We’re all about keeping our community safe! ⛔️

And let’s not forget our community discussions on PPG actions aimed at improving local healthcare access. Your voice matters, and together, we can make a difference! 🙏

Thanks for being such an essential part of our community. We look forward to seeing you at the library!
