๐Ÿ”Ž Local Lens #5 Answer | Tadpole Garden Villageโ€™s street names

For this weekโ€™s Local Lens, weโ€™ve been looking at something we probably walk past without thinking too much about - street names. Thereโ€™s a definite Arts & Crafts / Pre-Raphaelite theme running through many of them, with some fascinating names behind the signs.

Here are a few examples:
William Morris Way โ€“ William Morris, designer, craftsman, writer and one of the leading figures of the Arts & Crafts movement.
John Ruskin Road โ€“ John Ruskin, art critic and writer whose ideas about craftsmanship and design were hugely influential.
Webb Lane โ€“ Philip Webb, architect and friend of Morris.
Burne Jones Avenue โ€“ Edward Burne-Jones, painter and designer, and close friend of Morris.
Rossetti Lane โ€“ Dante Gabriel Rossetti, painter, poet and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
Millais Close โ€“ John Everett Millais, painter and founding Pre-Raphaelite.
Woolner Road โ€“ Thomas Woolner, sculptor and one of the original Pre-Raphaelites.
Ashbee Crescent โ€“ C.R. Ashbee, architect, designer and founder of the Guild of Handicraft.
Gimson Crescent โ€“ Ernest Gimson, architect and furniture designer.
Jekyll Close โ€“ Gertrude Jekyll, garden designer, horticulturist and writer.
Eglantyne Avenue & Jebb Close โ€“ Eglantyne Jebb, social reformer and co-founder of Save the Children.
And then thereโ€™s The Strawberry Thief.
The pub is named after one of William Morrisโ€™s most famous textile designs, featuring thrushes stealing fruit from the garden at Kelmscott Manor, Morrisโ€™s country home in Oxfordshire.

There are plenty more too - De Morgan, Beardsley, Siddal, Rackham, Kempe, Mackmurdo, Brantwood, Rodmarton, Pugin and others.
And interestingly, we believe some of the names may relate not directly to the person, but to houses or places associated with them - another little layer to the story.

Iโ€™m sure we have residents who will know far more about this, soโ€ฆ
Do you know the story behind your street name? Have we missed one with a particularly interesting connection?

St Andrews Parish Council is saying a fond farewell to Dave Plimmer, who is retiring after an impressive 21 years working in grounds maintenance in the local area.

Dave joined St Andrews Parish Council six and a half years ago, having previously worked for Swindon Borough Council. Since joining the Parish Council, Dave has been a valued member of the Grounds Maintenance team and a familiar face around the parish.

From gang mowing and planting trees to chain sawing and the many jobs that come with looking after our green spaces, Dave has played his part in keeping the parish looking its best.

His knowledge, experience and willingness to get stuck in have made him a valued member of the team. Much of the work carried out by the Grounds team happens quietly in the background, but it makes a real difference to the places residents use and enjoy every day.

To mark Dave's retirement, colleagues at St Andrews Parish Council gathered for a tea and cake celebration to thank him for his years of hard work and to wish him well for the future.

Luke Jones, Operations Manager at St Andrews Parish Council, said:

โ€œDave has been a great member of the team and his experience, knowledge and hard work will be missed. He has never been afraid to get stuck in and has always been willing to take on whatever job needed doing.
Dave has spent 21 years working in grounds maintenance in the local area, including the last six and a half years with St Andrews Parish Council. That is a fantastic amount of service, and he has certainly earned his retirement.
On behalf of everyone at St Andrews Parish Council, I would like to thank Dave for everything he has done and wish him a very happy and well-deserved retirement.โ€

St Andrews Parish Council would like to thank Dave for his hard work and commitment over the past six and a half years and wish him a very happy retirement and all the best for the future.

Three Councillors Visit Iconic Vygon Building

Yesterday, three of our councillors โ€” Steve Heyes, Sue McDonald and Syed Bukhari โ€” visited the Vygon site, where they learned that the iconic building has reached the end of its useful life.

A proposal to deliver a new, purpose-built headquarters on the southern part of the site, helping secure Vygonโ€™s long-term future in Swindon whilst retaining all existing jobs on the site was shown along with a proposal for some new homes on the site.

You can find out more by following the link below. There are only a few days left to register any comments or views you may have, so please take a look and have your say.

๐ŸŒฟ Grounds Maintenance Team Update ๐ŸŒฟ

Our Grounds Maintenance Team have been busy across the parish this week, carrying out a range of essential maintenance and safety work to keep our open spaces and footpaths safe, accessible and looking their best.

โœ‚๏ธ Abbey Meads โ€“ safety cut-backs have been carried out to shrubs where vegetation was beginning to encroach on paths and public areas.

๐ŸŒณ St Andrews Ridge to Ash Brake footpath โ€“ the team have cut back the edges of the footpath, helping to keep the route clear and easier for residents to use.

๐Ÿšถ Lady Lane โ€“ vegetation along the edge of the footpath has been cleared back to make the route more user-friendly. While carrying out the work, the team also discovered a large fallen branch, which was safely removed.

๐Ÿงน Standen Way to Groundwell Bridge โ€“ the team have cleaned the gutters along the footpath and cut back overhanging vegetation, helping to improve both access and drainage.

A lot of this work may go unnoticed, but these regular safety cut-backs and maintenance tasks are an important part of keeping our public spaces safe, accessible and well maintained.

A big thank you to the team for all their hard work this week! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒณ
