Local councillors got stuck into removing graffiti from the glazing around the Tented Market yesterday morning as part of The Big Town Centre Clean-Up.

There was plenty of scrubbing taking place using specialist cleaning wipes and their efforts have made a noticeable difference to this derelict privately-owned building.

🎉Celebrate the end of the summer holidays with a day filled with fun and activities in the town centre.🥳

A Day at the Wharf is taking place on the green space at Wharf Green on Saturday, 29 August, between 10am and 4pm, with a variety of free activities for children and families.

Live music performances will be held on a dedicated stage with support from Swindon 105.5, alongside arts and craft activities being hosted by Artsite, Museum & Art Swindon and the Creation Station. Swindon Open Studios is also hosting some children’s reading sessions.

And, back by popular demand, is The Bubble Master. The children’s entertainer was a smash hit at last year’s Summer at the Green events and is returning with his bubble magic between 11am and 2.30pm.

Free fencing taster sessions will also be on offer from Swindon Fencing Club along with some fun lawn games for all alongside a competition for the Swindon Junior Town Cryer, which is being held at midday.

Activities and events are subject to change based on the weather and any other unforeseen circumstances. The day is free to attend and no booking is necessary, but food outlets may be available at an additional cost.

A little baking can make someone’s birthday extra special 🎂

A big thank you to our wonderful volunteer Sian, who recently baked these delicious cupcakes for a Swindon resident celebrating her 92nd birthday. We hear they went down a treat! 🧁

Sian is one of our Forget Me Not Cakes volunteers, who bake birthday cakes for isolated residents who may not otherwise have a cake to celebrate their special day.

If you enjoy baking, you could get involved too. Forget Me Not Cakes is one of the flexible volunteering opportunities available through Live Well Swindon, helping to bring a little joy to people across our community.

It’s been a busy week for The Big Town Centre Clean-Up, an initiative bringing together the Council, businesses, volunteers and local communities to make a visible difference across Swindon town centre.

Council teams have continued their improvement work, clearing weeds, pruning trees, cleaning streets and carrying out a range of maintenance tasks to help create a cleaner environment for residents, visitors and businesses.

These efforts have been complemented by the fantastic support of volunteers, whose hard work has helped improve public spaces in the town centre.

A huge thank you to the residents and businesses who have given their time to support The Big Town Centre Clean-Up over the past week.

Working alongside council teams, volunteers have helped to litter pick, clear overgrown vegetation, remove graffiti, restore benches, and varnish and plant up new planters, making a real difference to the appearance of Swindon town centre.

The enthusiasm, teamwork and community spirit shown throughout the week have been fantastic, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has got involved.

There is still time to take part and help make a difference. If you'd like to lend a hand, you can register to volunteer for Thursday, 26 August or Friday, 27 August.

We’d like to say a huge thanks to volunteer groups Keep Swindon Tidy and Eastcott Community Clean Up who joined ward councillors and South Swindon Parish Council in clearing litter and flytipped rubbish as part of The Big Town Centre Clean-up this morning.

The volunteers have made a real difference to the alleyways off Crombey Street filling truck loads of waste which had been dumped in the local area. An absolutely fantastic job! 🙌

📚🎵 Looking for something to keep the kids busy over the next couple of weeks?

There’s still plenty happening at Swindon Libraries as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The free challenge encourages children to complete six reading or library activities over the summer. That could be reading a book, comic or graphic novel, listening to an audiobook, enjoying an eBook, getting creative or taking part in one of our library events.

And there are some fun ones still to come! 🎶

Children can join musical storytime and craft sessions, making their own kazoos and bead drums, or take part in The Jungle Jam – a song-writing adventure for children aged 5–11.

Along the way, children can collect stickers and other rewards, with a certificate and wooden medal for completing the challenge (while stocks last). Children aged four and under will also receive a free book when they sign up.

The challenge runs until 13 September, so there’s still plenty of time to complete those six activities.

Children can visit Lydiard House Museum for just £1 this month when accompanied by a full-paying adult 🤩

Step inside and try our new family friendly Mystery at the Museum to discover which of the St John family sold the precious heirloom.

There’s lots to enjoy, including:

🔍Mystery at the Museum - £5 per family, in addition to museum admission
✏️Mindful Art activities every Thursday throughout August - £5 per participant
👣Free museum trails

An army of councillors, community litter pickers and volunteers came out in force this morning to support The Big Town Centre Clean-Up.

Alleyways off Crombey Street were cleared of flytipping, graffiti tags were removed from the Tented Market and the town centre water fountain, while benches were sanded and varnished at Wharf Green.

It rounded off a fantastic week of volunteering, which has given some much needed TLC to our town centre. A big thanks to all involved! 👏
