This week is Volunteer's Week 💫

So we are shouting out the work of some of our brilliant Education Volunteers, who recently hosted the Earth Summit at Coleshill.

The Earth Summit brings together local schools to learn about and become champions for nature and climate action. 15 fantastic volunteers delivered 12 workshops, inspiring over 400 children across the 4 days.

Volunteers help to look after Buscot and Coleshill in so many different ways, from leading tours to looking after our countryside and so many tasks in between. We
couldn't do it without them! Thank you all!

✔️ Stick to clearly defined paths and avoid long grass
✔️ Wear long sleeves and trousers when out walking
✔️ Use insect repellent
✔️ Regularly check for ticks - including your pets!

These are just some of the steps you can take to protect yourself from ticks and tick bites, while still enjoying the outdoors!

Ticks are small, spider-like creatures that feed on the blood of birds and mammals - including humans.

If you do find a tick on your body, you should use a tick removal device or fine-toothed tweezers to gently grip it as close to the skin as possible.

Although tick bites aren’t usually painful, they can sometimes cause a red lump to appear and in some cases may cause swelling, itchiness and bruising.

A small number of ticks can also carry the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease, so it’s important to be tick aware and speak to a GP if you start to feel unwell.

Today, 22 May, marks International Day for Biodiversity, an annual celebration of how local actions having a global impact.

Across West Oxfordshire, we’re doing what we can to help nature and species to thrive.

In the parkland at Coleshill, we’ve been restoring the wetland and installing ‘leaky’ dams to help protect homes and improve biodiversity for wetland plants, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates.

Alongside this, we’ve also been working on projects to restore hedgerows, which provide vital shelter and food for birds, insects and small mammals.

And at Chastleton House, we've adopted a slow approach to gardening, which means responding to nature’s rhythms and thinking ecologically to help nature thrive.

Of course there’s still lots of work to be done, but by restoring habitats, connecting people to nature and working beyond our boundaries, we are contributing to a healthier, more biodiverse planet for generations to come. 💚

Did you know that our sister site, White Horse Hill, is one of the many highlights along the Ridgeway National Trail?

It's an ancient 87-mile chalk ridge route that was first used by prehistoric man, stretching from Avebury to the Chilterns.

The hill itself is crowned by a dramatic Bronze Age chalk horse and is a place of mystery and romantic legend, with stories of dragon-slaying and poisoned blood.

You can find out more on Sunday 31 May, when we’re hosting a guided walk around White Horse Hill. Learn about some of the history and legends that surround it, as well as the work we do to take care of it.

The walk takes place on 31 May from 11am until 12.30pm. Tickets are £8 per adult, £4 per child – book here: https://rebrand.ly/WhiteHorseHillEvents

Cows, also known as "nature's lawn mowers" have returned to the parkland! 🐮

By grazing on the existing grass, cows can make room for new and different seeds to germinate, while their dung attracts hundreds of insects, which are a vital food source for lots of different wildlife.

While the cows are grazing, we kindly ask you to please:
🐮 Keep your dogs under effective control or on a lead, but let them off if cattle approach
🐮 Pick up dog poo
🐮 Stick to the public and permissive footpaths
🐮 Close all gates behind you

With your help, we hope to encourage more species of wildflowers, birds and insects into the parkland at Buscot and Coleshill.

Huge thanks to one of our volunteer photographers, Martin, for this image of a small tortoiseshell butterfly.

They're commonly seen across gardens, grassland and farmland across the UK and can be spotted all year round.

Butterflies across the UK need help, now more than ever, and you can help to encourage them into your garden by planting lots of nectar-producing flowers and plants.

Is there such a thing as mill ASMR? On Sunday we had our watermill open to visitors and producing meal for the first time in nearly six years. The next chance to come on a guided tour will be on the 1st of July, but until then we'll leave you with the rather satisfying combination of mill sounds.

Every year, The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings hosts , an annual celebration of the UK's historic mills and watermills.

Coleshill has been home to a watermill for centuries, with the current structure and machinery dating from 1790. We're very proud to say that it's some of the oldest mill machinery in the country still capable of performing its original job.

To celebrate, we thought we'd share a few of our favourite photos of the mill and a reminder that although today's tour is fully booked, we still have space on Wednesday 1 July and Saturday 10 October. Find out more here: https://rebrand.ly/EventsAtColeshill

Today, 8 May, marks the anniversary of VE Day and the official end of the Second World War in Europe.

Between 1940 and 1944 hundreds of civilians came to Coleshill in secret to train for Churchill's 'secret' army in case of enemy invasion.

Today, several wartime structures still survive across the estate, including bunkers and a guard house.

You can discover more about Coleshill's wartime past on one of our guided walks, which we host throughout the year. Find out more here: https://rebrand.ly/EventsAtColeshill
