Our maintenance team have continued their fantastic work on the East side of the lower ward wall. This section of wall was probably built circa 1240 to 1260 and what you see here is the result of the wall being demolished and slighted after the siege in 1645-6! 💥 ⚔️

The Beeston Heddle have been hard at it again, with their Bronze Age weaving! 🧶

They noticed that the weave on the loom was very 'loose' so decided to try pushing the weave together with a comb. The result was very promising & the photos show a good inch gap that they managed to reduce.

It has been left on the loom on display. Pop by the Roundhouse to view the project!

Mon 27th April marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the 1935-36 Beeston well investigation by a volunteer team of scientists and staff from ICI Winnington.

It was the day when Dr Reginald Gibson descended into the well, deposited a sealed vacuum flask containing the names of the investigation team, gathered up all the remaining equipment and signalled to his colleagues to haul him back up to the surface.

He was the last person to stand that deep (113 yards) inside the well, as it was steadily refilled with stones and other items thrown down by both visitors and vandals over subsequent years.

The team hadn’t found the legendary secret passageway they were looking for because the well had started refilling with water after a wetter than usual winter and they couldn’t excavate any deeper. However, the reputed 122 yards’ depth of the well is based solely on rumour and conjecture rather than any accurate historic measurement, so it’s possible the ICI team were closer to the bottom than they thought.

Further details of those involved have been uncovered in recent months, and have been updated at https://www.beestoncastlewell.co.uk – if any of the named people there were your relatives or ancestors and you know more about this project please get in touch via the website’s contact page.
