Join Make Votes Matter in Taunton are campaigning for a fairer and more representative voting system. We are meeting 1030 at The Cosy Club, Hunts Court, Corporation Street, Taunton TA1 4AJ. We will then be on Taunton High Street from 11. This event is part of MVMs Democracy Action Weekend.

The 4th of July marks a year since the most disproportional election result in British history. It’s time to make it clear: we need a politics that reflects the people it serves.

Across the weekend 4-6 July, people up and down the country will take action to demand real democracy, aiming to reach 100,000 people.

Our local groups around the country are organising rallies, picnics, street stalls and creative actions to spread the word about the need for a fairer voting system.

In 1885, for the first time, most MPs were elected using First Past the Post in single-member seats.

While subsequent governments have introduced tweaks to our voting system, this fundamental aspect of our democracy has remained unchanged since the 19th century, when:

- Women couldn't vote, and neither could millions of men.
- 12 out of the 13 parties in today's Parliament didn't exist.
- We didn't have cars, the radio, the NHS, anti-discrimination legislation or even tea bags.

The world has evolved and progressed in so many ways. Meanwhile, our democracy is stuck in the past, with an outdated electoral system that doesn't represent the values and political diversity modern Britain.

It's time to move on. It's time for Proportional Representation.
