As the clocks go back this weekend, roads across Somerset will become darker earlier and weather conditions may be more challenging. Add Halloween into the mix, with more children and families out enjoying the festivities, and it's important that everyone takes extra care.

✅ Slow down and drive to the conditions. ✅ Look out for children near roads and crossing points. ✅ Allow extra stopping distance in wet weather. ✅ Wear bright or reflective clothing if you're walking or cycling.

🌧️ Stormy weather ahead? Slow down and stay alert. 🌧️

With wet roads, heavy rain and stronger winds forecast across Somerset this week, driving conditions can change quickly.

✅ Allow extra time for your journey
✅ Increase your following distance
✅ Use dipped headlights when visibility is reduced
✅ Take extra care around flooded roads and standing water
✅ Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists who may be harder to see

When wet leaves build up on the road, they can become surprisingly slippery, sometimes affecting grip in a similar way to ice.
As autumn arrives:
✅ Slow down on rural roads
✅ Increase your following distance
✅ Brake gently and earlier than usual
✅ Watch for mud and debris near fields and country lanes
The road surface may not be as grippy as it looks.
