Heartstart Somerset

Heartstart Somerset The skills of emergency life support (ELS) are simple and can save lives. Performing early CPR buys time and more than doubles the chances of survival.

ELS is the set of actions needed to keep someone alive until professional help arrives. They include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dealing with choking, serious bleeding and helping someone that may be having a heart attack. The most important factor determining survival after a cardiac arrest is the time from collapse of the casualty to defibrillation. Through Heartstart UK the

BHF aims to make free CPR training more widely available. Heartstart Somerset
Free ELS training is provided locally by Heartstart Somerset, a scheme run by volunteers who co-ordinate a partnership between the Resuscitation Training Department at Musgrove Park Hospital, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency services professionals working under the umbrella of the BHF.

On Friday 7th March 2025 at the Flying Horse Pub in Taunton, a member of the public collapsed in the car park and suffered a cardiac arrest. The quick actions from the bar staff (Tina Bowden), who started CPR until the ambulance arrived contributed in saving the gentleman’s life. He has since had a stent fitted and is recovering.
Phil Musgrove our instructor trained some of the staff in the pub which had helped Tina having the confidence in starting CPR. Well done to all involved and shows how important this vital training is.
Next step is to purchase a defibrillator and cabinet to go on the outside of the pub.

It was fantastic to reunite Mr Chainey with the medical staff who cared for him after he suffered a cardiac arrest following the Eastleigh match. 💚
