Gideon Amos - MP for Taunton & Wellington has responded to the shocking maternity and neonatal report, which has revealed the poor state of Musgrove Park Hospital and the Maternity Unit, which requires urgent attention.

Leaking roofs, poor temperature control, it's just not acceptable, and Gideon is right to push back that waiting until 2033 for a new maternity unit is far too late.

It was great to see Gideon Amos - MP for Taunton & Wellington speaking in a Westminster Hall debate, calling for a crackdown on fly-tipping after a series of incidents across Taunton and Wellington.

Fly-tipping blights communities and our shared spaces and poses a threat to wildlife and the environment, especially when hazardous waste is dumped.

In the debate, Gideon highlighted a gap in regulation on private land that his team identified, resulting in waste building up because it is unclear whose responsibility it is to clear it up, and he is exploring what changes to the law are needed to rectify this.

In the meantime, as Gideon said in this debate, it is all of our responsibility to ensure our rubbish is properly disposed of and that effective deterrents are in place.

Thank you Gideon Amos - MP for Taunton & Wellington for speaking up about this important issue.

Following my speech on Wednesday I want to be clear on my position on illegal shops and criminal activity that has been affecting Taunton and Wellington.

There are a few simple steps that should be taken, and I will not let up on this:

-Extending police closure notices (currently they are only 72 hours, followed by court process)

-Dodgy landlords knowingly letting units for illegal activity must face punishment, if a unit is repeatedly facing closure, it is not just a poor reflection on our town, but a pattern of complicity.

Our shops should be let out to genuine businesses that play by the rules and encourage visitors.

-Allocate resources to Trading Standards, it is frustrating when illegal activity is staring us in the face, but there is not capacity to deal with it. This must go hand in hand with more police on the street with time to deal with this.

The Government has already caused enough issues for our genuine businesses, pubs, shops, cafes etc with business rate rises and NI increase, illegal activity puts people off visiting which worsens the situation.

I am grateful to all the local businesses continuing to be a positive force in Taunton and Wellington, but as I have said before, whilst resilient, we are not immune to the problems facing towns across the country.
