MILESTONE MOMENT: THE QUADS ON THE SCALES! ๐ŸŽฅ๐ŸฆŠโš–๏ธ

Our four red-ruffed lemur quadruplets, Boo, Binks, Wookie, and Wicket, had a big milestone day this week: their very first official weigh-in training! ๐Ÿฉบโœจ

Routine weighing is a vital part of preventative healthcare for our animals. Tracking their weight lets our keepers ensure these fast-growing babies are hitting all their healthy growth targets. Using positive reinforcement (and a few delicious fruit rewards!), Head Keeper Lia and the team guided each cheeky quad onto the scales voluntarily, no fuss, no handling, just fun and snacks! ๐ŸŒ

Our little squirrel monkey baby has officially unlocked the ultimate dining strategy: climb straight into the serving bowl so no one else can steal the freshest snacks! ๐Ÿ‡

Watching this tiny explorer gain confidence, try new solid foods, and show off their cheeky personality has been one of the highlights of our summer.

MEET CHILLI, GINGER & JUNIPER! ๐Ÿฆœโœจ

Remember our 3 clever blue-throated conure chicks who were recently spotted "helping" dad Paul with his target training? They officially have names!

Say hello to Chilli, Ginger, and Juniper! ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Our keeping team chose this spicy, botanical trio of names to match their feisty personalities, vibrant feathers and the colour of their newly fitted identification rings. These three fledglings are full of energy, super curious, and spend their days practicing their flying skills and exploring every inch of their canopy home.

BLINK AND YOUโ€™LL MISS IT! ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿธโšก
In real-time, a poison dart frog's strike takes under 50 milliseconds literally faster than the blink of a human eye! ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ
Thanks to a bit of slow-motion camera magic, you can finally see the incredible precision of our Blue Poison Dart Frogs in action. Watch how their sticky, muscular tongues unfold to snag a meal in a fraction of a second! ๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿชฐ

Their vibrant electric-blue skin acts as a warning to predators in the wild ("aposematic coloration" proving small things can be mighty!), but here in our FROG room, theyโ€™re just showing off their lightning-fast hunting skills. ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

MEET DEVONโ€™S NATIVE MINI-BEASTS!

While our exotic rainforest residents usually steal the spotlight, our tree-shaded sanctuary is also a thriving haven for native UK wildlife!โœจ

Check out this Bloody-nosed Beetle our director spotted right here on the zoo grounds.

Despite the dramatic name (given because they emit a foul-tasting red drop from their mouth to scare off hungry birds!), these slow-moving, flightless beetles are completely harmless to humans and play an important role in our local ecosystem. ๐ŸŒพ

Protecting natural habitats for wild bugs, birds, and flora on site is just as vital to our mission as saving endangered species abroad. Next time you stroll along our woodland pathways, keep your eyes peeled to see what native wildlife you can spot! ๐Ÿ”Ž๐ŸŒฑ

MIDWEEK MOOD: CHEWIE & ALEX EDITION ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ๐Ÿ’

If you need permission to slow down today, take a cue from our tufted capuchins, Chewie and Alex! ๐Ÿ˜ด

These two clever primates spend plenty of time leaping through the canopy and solving puzzle feeders, but even the most energetic capuchins need a midday recharge. Here they are soaking up the peaceful woodland calm on their favorite lounging log.

Life in the trees is tough work, after all! ๐ŸŒฟ

EARLY LEARNERS! ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿฆœ๐ŸŽฏ

Head Keeper Lia set out to do a quick target training session with Paul, our dad conure, but his clever new fledglings had other ideas!

Instead of letting dad take centre stage, these enthusiastic youngsters decided to crash the lesson and show off their own skills to snag a share of the treats!

Target training uses positive reinforcement, rewarding the birds whenever they gently touch their beak to the target stick. Itโ€™s a vital tool for stress-free healthcare, allowing our keepers to guide the flock onto scales for weigh-ins or move them comfortably between spaces without any stress. ๐Ÿฉบ

Paul might have been Lia's intended student today, but his fledglings are proving they're fast learners and total spotlight stealers! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿฆœ

FAMILY MEALTIME WITH THE TITIS! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‡

Table for three! Here's a lovely shot of our T**i monkey family gathered around their food bowl for a group snack session.

Coppery T**i monkeys are famous for their tight-knit family bonds. In the wild, family members eat together, sleep snuggled up with their tails intertwined, and groom each other daily. Seeing all three sharing peaceful meals like this is what zoo family life is all about! ๐ŸŒฟ

Those eyes aren't missing a single thing. ๐Ÿ†โœจ

A rare up-close look at Harley, our majestic Margay.

Often mistaken for ocelots, margays are sleek, highly specialised wildcats native to the dense forest canopies of Central and South America. They are absolute acrobats of the treetop world, equipped with extraordinary ankle joints that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing them to run down tree trunks completely headfirst, just like a squirrel!

Because margays are naturally nocturnal, catching Harley striking a pose like this during the day is always a special treat for visitors.

๐ŸŒฟ Support our ongoing care for rare and threatened carnivores by visiting us down Ness Drive! We're open 10am to 5pm daily.
