The Friends of Granville Country Park are a group of Volunteers that continue to care for Granville Country Park's Industrial Heritage.

Our park provides outdoor opportunities and enjoyment for all ages and abilities in our local communities.

Today’s work party began at Muxton marsh. Our task was to walk the Freehold Pitmound removing any fallen trees and cutting back branches overhanging the paths. Within two minutes of setting off we were soaked with hailstones. What a start! Fortunately the sun appeared and we dried off. We split into groups and met on the marsh. It was a lovely walk through the trees especially hearing the birds singing away. The meadows are looking lovely, though no sign of orchids yet.

Butterfly and Moth Conservation Project
Granville Local Nature Reserve, Tuesday 19th May 11 am in main car park on Granville Road.

10 places will be reserved for Friends of Granville and 10 to the public. The 10 places to the public will be ticketed through Eventbrite and will be live from 5pm today. Members of the friends of group won’t need to select a ticket they can simply turn up on the day.

The aim of opening it up to the public is to maximise the project and understanding of butterflies and their importance.

Lots going on in the park to tell you about.
Thursday’s work party was on TOW (top of the world). A lovely sunny day to be up there, bluebells and cowslips on the meadow. Our task was to cut back bushes to allow visitors to see the stunning view. You can see into Wales and beyond. Look at the toposcope to see the names of the places. You will see only one of us working in the photo because there is a steep drop over the fences and others were working there.
Another task was to carry on oiling the furniture. The picnic table, bench and TOW seat are looking better. The squirrel elsewhere has also had a coating of oil.
Those of you who walk on the other side of the park, Western Stockpile to the concrete will know it is often impassable because of water and mud. Finally some funds for a contractor were available. French drains were dug and mud scraped away. The road looking 100% better. Sadly some of the contractors machinery was vandalised, £2000+ to repair. Why do they do these things?? Please also report any bikers to the police, they are not allowed on the park.
I walked on the WSP. The heather is being overcome by Silver Birch and brambles, covering the ground. This is a special habit and we need to save it but too much for FOG to manage. It would require a large team of people to cut the birch down.
Finally my last photos will make your blood boil. This was on the car park. I reported it straight away and the fly tipping team removed it all this morning.

The plan on Thursday was to strim around the furnaces and cut back brambles overhanging the bridle. BUT best laid plans…..we were told by one of the Friends that a tree had fallen over the Heritage Trail. This meant a long walk to the concrete road, carrying all of our tools, and then along a very muddy path and up the slope to the tree. We were a small group, 6 of us.
It looked straightforward, but this was a tough tree. The branches had fallen across the path onto the top of a bush. It was difficult to saw, the branches has to be cut off first but they were stuck in the bush. Then we had to take turns sawing, it was so difficult. Eventually we managed to pull it round and clear the path. 2 hours. Phew! Great work FOG.
Then we walked back via the concrete road. Those of you walk on the Granville will know how flooded and muddy it can be. We now have a contractor working on the road in the hope that the water will drain. See photo. Watch this space.
I am adding a reminder about Telford Twincl Lottery. It costs £1 per week or more if you want. You have the chance to win £25 to £2,500. Money goes to good causes. We have recently received our first amount. We would like to purchase a new brushcutter, about £600. Every little helps.
Finally if you drive, or walk in the car park, look at the beautiful bluebells on the bankside.

Lovely day today for our work party. Especially hearing the drumming call of woodpeckers and the laughing call of the Green Woodpecker. We also spotted several Jays in the park this morning.

Split into several teams this morning. Some headed towards the bridle path to cut down a tree, which had already been removed. Thank you to whoever did this. There were one or two others to cut down on their way to the Western Stockpile side of the park. Sumps were cleared. We do this to prevent flooding on the paths. Part of the fencing had been smashed, that was repaired. Another team trimmed the rest of the brambles alongside the ditches on the meadow. More trees cut back on the concrete road. Speed bump checked. This is to divert the water on the concrete road. Finally made a start on cutting the brambles which are beginning to spread over the bridle path. Phew! Another productive day. Well done team FOG
I’ve also added the fly tipping along Granville Road. Disgraceful, I hope the fly tipping team can find evidence of who they are.

From T&W ecologists, W M Longreach carrying out willow removal on Muxton Marsh. Very happy to be able to tell you that the works on the Marsh were completed really quickly from a Monday morning start to being completed by lunch on Tue when I inspected the site. The machine accessed from Marshbrook Way and left site yesterday. The scrub has been pulled out with very little harm to surrounding fen (photo h) and placed on the edge of woodland to the north and south. It was possible for the low ground pressure excavator to almost completely avoid working from the meadow (photo j and l), so this remains unscarred.

The area mulched (after scrub removal) totals around 40% (hoping to get drone shots to aid mapping) and is in the drier sections (photos c and d) and we hope to continue, in a rotation, into the wetter areas in following year using similar equipment and bog mats. The aspiration is to create smaller mosaic patches, totalling 20% each year, in line with the management plan. Hopefully once we have trialled the wetter areas we can create a realistic coup map to aid a proper rotation to allow different ages of standing fen and keep scrub growth from becoming woodland!

What a glorious few days. Telford is looking fantastic with a host of golden daffodils and colourful crocuses dotted about on roadsides, roundabouts and parks. The Friends have been busy again removing trees fallen over the paths. First photos are of the new fences being broken by vandals in order to drive bikes over the WSP. Hopefully the new parts will hold. We worked again on the WSP side of the park beyond the concrete road. It’s a good walk, before we even begin to work. We cut down and cleared at least 6 trees along the path. Hard work but a lovely sunny day kept us in good spirits. The last photo is of the pumping house, which if you remember had a fallen across it and the path. The tree has now been cleared. The oak hasn’t been cut yet but should be done this week.
Students from Harper Adams University came to visit last week. They use the park for some of their studies. Their tutor spoke highly of the park.

Work party Thursday. A reduced team of only 5 this session. Loppers, saws, and spade to carry all the way to the Heritage Trial which is quite a trek. Gorse path to be checked first and gorse cut back if necessary. The birds will be nesting soon and the gorse gives them protection. Then a walk along the Trail cutting back as necessary . First stop the stile. This stile was set fire to quite a while ago. Burnt wooden posts sworn off and the area tidied up. Then a tree, fallen onto the path. A difficult tree to cut down but the team got to work and the path was reopened. A lot of trees are covered in ivy which can make the branches heavy and the tree falls. Next, the trench alongside the horse field. There is a spring in the field which overflows. The trench prevents the path becoming a bog. You can see the water running down. The team then cleared the vegetation next to the gate. All done! tools collected and the long walk to the car park. Great work FOG 10/10 for effort.

I know some of you have been asking about the trees which have fallen over near Muxton Bridge end of the park. The branches of these trees are too big for us cut. We are not able to use chain saws. Our tree officer is aware of these trees and his team will be removing them asap. They have had hundreds of trees to contend with after the storms and the snow.
