It was a pleasure to speak with Marcus from SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) at the Community and Emergency Services Day at the Cotswolds Designer Outlet and to hear about the extraordinary work SARA does along the rivers Avon, Severn, Usk, and Wye.

SARA is a volunteer search and rescue organisation supporting the emergency services across land and water. Its 200 volunteers, operating from seven search and rescue stations, including Tewkesbury, respond to more than 100 call-outs every year.

Working closely with the Coastguard, Fire and Rescue Services, and Police, their teams undertake cliff and mud rescue, flood and inland water response, land searches, and lifeboat operations. SARA also provides inshore lifeboat cover on parts of the Severn and Usk not covered by the RNLI.

Alongside emergency response, SARA provides water-safety education and training, with opportunities to get involved in both specialist and non-operational roles.

Their skill, dedication, time, and resources make an enormous difference to the communities that they serve.

It was lovely to meet Janet from the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) at the Community & Emergency Services Day at the Cotswolds Designer Outlet and to hear more about their vital work.

GWAAC provides specialist emergency care, with its Critical Care Team bringing hospital-level skills, equipment, and treatment directly to patients. They provide complex interventions at the scene, on the road, and in the air, helping to save lives.

A huge thank you to Janet and to everyone at the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity for the extraordinary work that you do for Tewkesbury and communities throughout the South West.

What a fantastic Community & Emergency Services Day at the Cotswolds Designer Outlet, recognising some of the brilliant causes, charities, community groups, emergency services, local businesses, and sports teams within our community.

It was a real pleasure to spend the day meeting so many of those involved, hearing more about their work, and learning about the extraordinary range of services, opportunities, and support that they provide.

A huge thank you to Grace and everyone at the Cotswolds Designer Outlet for organising the day and for inviting us to join them.

Coming soon: I’ll be sharing more about some of the fantastic people and organisations that we met and the important work they do in Tewkesbury.

What a brilliant day to see The Tewkesbury Kite Guy filling the skies with a spectacular array of kites, joined by the Avon Kite Flyers and the White Horse Kite Flyers.

The colour, creativity, skill, and sheer scale of the display brought something truly remarkable to the town.

It was wonderful to attend The Lark Ascending and to meet Chris Why, the Artistic Director, who has done some incredible work through the Tallis Choral Foundation, supporting and creating opportunities for young musicians and singers.

The singers were exceptional and it was lovely to see so much talent brought together in one ensemble.

It was also lovely to hear from Dr Joanna Rhodes, Chair of Trustees, during the evening about the Foundation’s work and the importance of giving emerging artists meaningful opportunities.

A particular highlight was hearing Jenny Wells play. She is phenomenally talented and it was an absolute pleasure to hear her accompany the choir on the violin.

Thank you to all those involved. It was a beautiful evening of music, bringing together remarkable performers and a rich musical heritage.

It was lovely to join the High Sheriff, Dame Fiona Reynolds DBE, for “Future Communities: Living Alongside Historic Floodplains,” exploring our rivers, ecology, and the future of Tewkesbury’s remarkable landscape.

Following a fascinating guided tour with Dr Geoff Sallis and a warm welcome to Tewkesbury Abbey, Martin Collett from CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) and I contributed to the wider discussion.

My talk focused on the important work of Safe Avon’s citizen scientists and the challenges facing our rivers, from PFAS “forever chemicals” to concerning phosphate levels recorded locally.

Citizen science gives communities evidence to understand what is happening in our waterways, ask important questions, and support the campaign for cleaner, healthier rivers.

These rivers are also part of an extraordinary living landscape, including the Severn Ham and the wider floodplains around Tewkesbury.

Protecting them means recognising the interdependence of water quality, biodiversity, ecosystem health, and the wider landscape. It also requires communities, scientists, conservation organisations, and local authorities to continue collaborating.

We have something beautiful worth protecting: living rivers, stunning wildlife, the Severn Ham, and our home, Tewkesbury.

It was an honour to join outside Tewkesbury Town Hall this morning for a particularly poignant Act of Remembrance.

On the 81st anniversary of VJ Day, which marked the end of the war in the Far East and, effectively, the end of the Second World War (formally concluded on 2nd September 1945), we remembered all those who served our country. We also paid tribute to Mike Kean-Price, former Town Crier and Town Sergeant, veteran, and Vice-President of the Tewkesbury Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Mike served in the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), as a young man, and remained deeply committed to the Armed Forces community throughout his life. His connection to VJ Day was especially personal, with his father having served with the 10th Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment, during the Far East campaign.

It was lovely to see Linda, and so many of those who knew and loved Mike, gathered together to remember him today.

We will remember them.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mike Kean-Price, who served Tewkesbury with distinction as our Town Crier and Town Sergeant for 26 years.

Mike was a much-loved figure in our town. He was a beacon of light and hope, full of warmth, humour, kindness, and had a deep love for Tewkesbury and its community.

I feel fortunate to have known Mike and to have counted him as a friend. My thoughts are very much with his family and with all those who loved him. His loss will be felt by so many.

On behalf of Tewkesbury, and personally, I send my deepest condolences to Mike’s family and friends at this time.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
