Michael Kean-Price, 1942-2026
Tewkesbury Town Council is honoured to celebrate the legacy of our beloved town icon and former Town Crier and Town Sarjeant Michael Kean-Price, who inspired us all with his unwavering dedication to our community for 26 years.
Mike was a champion of Tewkesbury in everyway from leading the annual Remembrance Parade to the proclamation of the new King. Mike could often be seen around Tewkesbury on a Saturday calling out the news and announcements for the town.
He will be dearly remembered and deeply missed.

Statement on grass cutting in Tewkesbury.

Tewkesbury Town Council is aware of residents' concerns regarding the lack of grass cutting in various areas of the town and understands the frustrations that have been raised.

It is important to clarify that the majority of grassed areas within Tewkesbury are not the responsibility of Tewkesbury Town Council. The grassed areas we are responsible for are:
Derek Graham Play Area
Warwick Place Play Area
St Mary's Road Moorings
Town Hall Gardens and the garden leading through to the Back of Avon

Responsibility for grass cutting across the wider town sits with a number of different bodies, including Tewkesbury Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council.

We are currently working with both Councils to better understand who is responsible for each area and to establish the areas requiring cutting and what the cost would be for taking this on.

However, it has been suggested that the Town Council should simply take on responsibility for grass cutting where other authorities have reduced maintenance or where current arrangements are not meeting residents' expectations. While we understand why this may appear to be an easy solution, the reality is more complex. The existing arrangements are often driven by financial pressures and if grass cutting could not be delivered within the budgets of the responsible authorities, the Town Council would need to carefully consider how we could fund the grass cutting in areas that were previously cut but have not been cut this year.

Taking on additional grass cutting responsibilities would increase ongoing costs, particularly if residents wish to see more frequent cuts. Any such costs would need to be met through the Town Council's budget and could have an impact on the council tax precept paid by local residents.

For that reason, this is not a decision that can be made quickly. Before any proposals are considered, we need a clear understanding of land ownership, existing responsibilities, service standards and the financial implications for us and for local taxpayers.

We will continue discussions with the relevant authorities and will provide further updates as soon as we can.
