PRESS RELEASE:
Heritage Boost Following Town Council Grant

A newly formed Thetford organisation is celebrating a major cash boost after receiving a £50,000 grant from Thetford Town Council.

Thetford Heritage Trust was established earlier this year to help promote and develop Thetford’s unique heritage offer, which includes links to Thomas Paine, Duleep Singh, Boudica, Dad’s Army and the UK’s first Black Mayor, Alan Glaisyer Minns.

Town Councillors agreed the grant at a meeting held at the end of July and celebrated the award with a cheque presentation. The funding has enabled the trust to begin operating, with the new Chief Officer taking up the role this month.

Chair of Thetford Heritage Trust, Terry Jermy MP, stated, “This funding marks an important first step in establishing Thetford Heritage Trust. Our vision begins with activating the potential of the Carnegie and Guildhall. We want to celebrate Thetford’s history while creating new opportunities for arts, culture and community activity - for the local people and visitors alike. Key to improving Thetford’s town centre will be getting visitors into the town so the Trust will have wider and longer-term benefits as well. We will be working closely with the Town Council, our Trustees, and the community to make this vision a reality. I am grateful to the Council for their support with this grant”.

This decision builds on Thetford Town Council’s wider commitment to preserving and promoting the town’s rich heritage, including improvements to the historic Guildhall and its cupolas, and the ongoing restoration project at St Peter’s Church. The St Peter’s Church Project has recently received approval to begin its Development Phase, supported by a £608,146 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery Players, and supported by a £120,000 grant from the forThetford Programme, as part of the government’s Pride in Place 10-year regeneration initiative.

The Council believes that the establishment of the Trust, together with the appointment of a Chief Officer and a dedicated Board of Trustees, will be instrumental in ensuring that these important community assets are managed effectively. As part of this plan, the Trust will also take over the management of the town’s Guildhall and Carnegie complex.
Councillor Annie Blakbourn, Chair of Thetford Town Council’s Heritage and Events Committee, said, “The grant is essential for covering the startup costs of the Trust and allowing it to begin operations. We are excited about the Trust's potential to build new partnerships, enhance these venues, and boost public engagement with our local heritage. We look forward to this collaboration and are eager to see the positive impact it will have on the community.”
Looking forward, the Trust intends to pursue charitable status, which will significantly improve its ability to carry out community outreach projects and achieve its objectives. The Town Council is committed to supporting the Trust throughout this foundational stage, recognising the important role it will play in ushering in a new era for the Carnegie and Guildhall.

PRESS RELEASE:
St Peter’s Church Project Moves Forward as Council Receives Permission to Start

Thetford Town Council has received permission to start from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to commence the Development Phase of its ambitious project to restore and bring St Peter’s Church back into greater community use.
This Grade II listed church, located in the heart of Thetford town centre, is an important part of the town’s heritage. The project aims to safeguard the historic building for the future while exploring how it can be given a new and sustainable role within the community.
Earlier this year, the Council was awarded £608,146 by the Heritage Fund for the Development Phase, made possible thanks to National Lottery players.
This significant investment was made possible by a £120,000 grant from the forThetford Programme, as part of the government’s Pride in Place 10-year regeneration initiative, that should see up to £20 million invested in Thetford through Thetford’s Neighbourhood Board.
With permission to start now confirmed, work is already beginning behind the scenes.
As part of the Development Phase, the Council will appoint a Project Manager and a Hub and Programme Manager. They will work alongside the Town Council officers and specialist consultants to undertake further surveys and assessments of the building, develop plans for its future use, and establish in detail the work needed to restore it.
Councillor Annie Blackbourn said:
“Receiving permission to start is an exciting step forward for St Peter’s Church and for Thetford. There is still a great deal of work ahead of us, but we can now begin developing the project in detail.”
“St Peter’s is an important part of our town’s history and heritage, and this project is about protecting that history while looking at how the building can have a sustainable future and once again play an active role within the community.”
The Development Phase will run until November 2027 and will include detailed project development, surveys and specialist consultancy work, business and activity planning, partnership development and preparation for a future Delivery Phase application to the Heritage Fund.
Jo Pearson, Chair of the Thetford Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board, added, “This is a significant moment for Thetford, and I congratulate the Town Council on getting the project to this point.
"The £120,000 committed through the forThetford Programme has helped unlock more than £600,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. That is precisely what Pride in Place funding is for.
"When we spoke to residents last summer, they told us their heritage matters, and this is what acting on that looks like. St Peter's is Thetford's money being spent on what Thetford asked for."

Thetford Town Council's Community Ranger, George, has been working on another section of the St John's/Redcastle estate over the past week.

Last Friday, George cleared an area of overgrowth and improved the edging around the grass area to redefine the pathway. He also focused on weeding in the area.

This is a great start to tidying up another section of the estate. If you live on or around the estate and would like to support George by volunteering your time, or if you have suggestions for the area, please get in touch with him via email at [email protected] or by using the suggestion box located in the Canons Walk shop.

Whilst we will deal with any concerns directly on our own land, we cannot advise on pest control issues on private land or on land that does not belong to Thetford Town Council.

If it is in the following areas:
- Castle Park
- Carnegie and Guildhall Complex and surrounding pocket park
- Thetford Market Place
- Barnham Cross Common
- Melford Common
- Ford Meadow
- Within any Children's Play Parks in the Town
- Any of the Allotment Sites

or any of the car parks or other land owned by ourselves (please see our website for details of land ownership),
please report it directly to our team.

For any other areas, please seek advice from Breckland Council or Norfolk County Council, who will advise on whether they own the land. Any pest control on private land or housing is down to the homeowner or land owner.
