Starting back on Saturday 12th September is Little Stars children's drama group. The club runs Saturdays term time from 10.30am to 12.00pm at Thornbury Methodist Hall for ages 7 to 12.

📢 Free Dr Bike Health Checks Coming to Thornbury! 🚲
South Gloucestershire Council will be running a free Dr Bike session on Saturday 5 September as part of the Love Thornbury event on Thornbury High Street.
🔧 At a Dr Bike session, a qualified bicycle mechanic will:
• Check your bike's condition
• Carry out minor repairs such as puncture repairs
• Adjust brakes and gears
• Fit brake blocks and replace cables
• Provide advice on bike maintenance and potential issues
While the mechanic may be able to check bikes for people who turn up on the day, booking a slot in advance is strongly recommended.

Who Deserves to Be Thornbury’s Green Hero?

Nominations are now open for the Thornbury Mayor’s Awards 2027, celebrating the people and organisations making a real difference to life in Thornbury through environmental action, supporting nature and biodiversity, promoting sustainability and encouraging others to care for the natural world.
Anyone can make a nomination, so whether you are a resident, community group, organisation or local business, we want to hear about the people and projects you think deserve recognition.

There are five award categories:
• Community Environmental Champion/Heroes Award
• Green Spaces and Community Gardening Award
• Environmental Education and Awareness Award
• Wildlife Support and Habitat Creation Award
• Sustainable Business Leadership Award

The Mayor’s Awards are a chance to shine a light on the people and projects that often happen quietly in the background but make a real difference to our community; it could be through caring for a local green space, creating a wildlife-friendly garden, running an environmental project, inspiring others to learn about nature or making a local business more sustainable.

Nominations close on 21st September 2026, so residents are encouraged to think about the people, groups, organisations and businesses in Thornbury who deserve recognition for their environmental work, and to find out more about the Mayor’s Awards 2027 and submit a nomination via the Thornbury Town Council website www.thornburytowncouncil.gov.uk

Exciting Refurbishment Planned for Streamleaze Play Area in Thornbury!

Thornbury Town Council is delighted to announce that refurbishment works at Streamleaze Play Area are due to begin week commencing 7th September 2026.

The improvements will give the popular play area a fresh new lease of life, with around two thirds of the existing play equipment being replaced with new equipment. The play area will be temporarily cordoned off for around four weeks while the works take place, and we thank local families for their patience while the improvements are carried out.

The refurbishment follows a public consultation with local residents, which included a vote on options for some of the new pieces of equipment. The final design reflects the views received, incorporating the most popular equipment choices alongside improvements to the wider play space. While this is a refurbishment rather than a completely new play area, the changes will make a significant difference and provide lots of exciting new opportunities for children to play, explore and have fun.

The artist’s impression gives a good indication of what the transformed play area will look like. The public consultation did tell us that it was important to keep a baby swing in the play area, so that’s one important change we are making to the original design.

The Town Council is really pleased to be able to deliver these improvements and looks forward to seeing the refurbished play area taking shape. We hope local children and families will be delighted with the results and, once the work is complete, enjoy the new equipment and the refreshed play space for many years to come.

We are seeking a full-time Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our friendly and busy grounds team. You will help Thornbury Town Council to look after many of the facilities that it is responsible for including the Mundy Playing Fields, Chantry Playing Field, four other local play areas, a skate park, many other green spaces, and a well-maintained cemetery.

This role involves assisting with general grounds maintenance work such as grass mowing, watering, weeding and working in the Cemetery. Additionally, the grounds maintenance team are responsible for keeping our facilities free from litter, keeping changing rooms and toilets clean, inspecting our play parks to ensure they remain safe for users and assisting with keeping our buildings in good condition.

The work is varied and rewarding. You will be using a wide variety of equipment and machinery and will receive full training. You will be contributing to the local community of Thornbury, keeping it a great place to live and work.

Salary range: £26,403 - £28,598 depending on experience

Generous local government pension scheme, training and uniform

37 hours a week with some weekend working – 1.00pm finish on a Friday

31 days holiday per annum

Permanent contract (with 3-month probationary period)

Driving licence essential

Upcoming overnight road closures in Thornbury and Alveston.

South Gloucestershire Council has announced temporary overnight road closures from 28th September 2026 as part of Active Travel works.

The closures are expected to last around one month, taking place between 8pm and 6am:

📍 Grovesend Road – between Morton Way/Midland Way and the A38
📍 Tytherington Road – approximately 50m from the A38
📍 A38 Gloucester Road – between the B4061 junction and a point around 100m north-east of Tytherington Road.

Diversion routes will be signposted.

Please allow extra time for journeys and take care when travelling through the area. 🚗

The legal order allows the closures to be in place for up to 18 months, but they will only be implemented when required for the works.

Ed Phillis will be setting off on his bike from Thornbury Town Hall on 10th September and finishing at Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire’s Advice Centre in Yate later the same day!

Join Thornbury Mayor Helen Ball to wave off Ed at 8.00am on Thursday 10th September from Thornbury Town Hall.

• Adviser Ed Phillis will cycle to all the locations of Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire’s drop-ins in a single day on 10th September – starting in Thornbury, going through areas such as Bradley Stoke, Emersons Green and Staple Hill and ending in Yate
• He is taking on the 33-mile challenge – dubbed Tour de CAB - to raise funds and awareness for the charity and “highlight just how important these local centres are”
• Ed, a dad-of-two from Easton, is a Help To Claim Adviser at the charity and helps people make first-time Universal Credit claims
A Bristol dad is cycling to all of the locations of free advice drop-ins offered by the charity he works for – in a single day.

Along the way, he will visit each of the 12 locations where the charity runs a free advice drop-in session as part of his “Tour de CAB”.

These drop-in sessions allow members of the public to get much-needed support from the charity without an appointment, in areas including - but not limited to - benefits, debt, housing and cost of living help.

The charity supported more than 7,300 people in 2025-26 and saved clients a combined total of £15 million - the equivalent of more than £2,000 back in the pocket of each person helped.

Drop-ins are an essential part of how the charity works as they allow people to benefit from excellent advice in their local area without having to travel further afield.

The charity is grateful to town and parish councils who fund the charity’s advice sessions across South Gloucestershire.

Ed is a Help To Claim Adviser – which means he supports people through the process of making a first-time Universal Credit claim.

The dad-of-two who lives in Easton is taking on the 33-mile challenge to raise funds and awareness for Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire.

The independent charity is reliant on donations and grants to keep doing its vital work.

He said: “I think it’s really important, and supports social democracy, that people have access to face-to-face advice in their local community.

“Not everyone wants to deal with everything digitally, and for some people the sheer complexity of dealing with public services can become overwhelming.

“Our local drop-in services provide a vital, human point of contact for people who may have limited digital skills, limited mobility, or other reasons why accessing advice online or travelling further simply isn’t practical.

“I wanted to do something that would raise money for the service I work for, but also highlight just how important these local centres are.

“Cycling between all of South Gloucestershire Citizens Advice’s drop-in centres seemed like a good way of connecting the fundraising with the places and communities that the service actually exists to support.

“And will hopefully help me gain a bit of fitness!”
