Strathnaver Museum Come and discover the vibrant culture and heritage of north Sutherland. What3Words: ///importers.creamed.sitting

Strathnaver Museum is the Museum of the Clearances and tells this fascinating and at times brutal story within the wider perspective of our cultural and social history. The Museum holds a diverse range of objects depicting life in the north Highlands from prehistoric to more modern times. Within the Museum you can discover the Bronze Age burial beaker unearthed by a Highland Council roadcrew in 19

81 and marvel at the tools our ancestors used to work their land in order to feed their families. Just outside the Museum you can also see the impressive and elaborately designed Pictish Farr Stone dated from around 800 to 850AD. On the second floor of the Museum you will find the Clan Mackay Room which is full of fascinating artefacts including a very special chanter. The Museum is housed within the former Parish Church of St Columba at Clachan in Bettyhill which is notable in its own right and is listed by Historic Scotland for its regional architectural importance. The museum also holds an interesting and varied archive of books, manuscripts and recorded oral histories which is valuable for genealogical and academic researchers. We also regularly stage special events and exhibitions to keep up to date why not sign up to our newsletter or keep an eye out for our event listings.

Celebrating 50 Years

On 5th July 1976 Strathnaver Museum opened its doors to welcome visitors from near and far to share and celebrate the cultural heritage of north west Sutherland.

An article appeared in The Scotsman on 4 August 1976 with a colourful story about visitors joining a crowd of 80 folk waiting by the roadside. Thinking a wedding was happening in the church they asked when the bride would be appearing only to be disappointed that the last wedding to have taken place in the building was in the 1930s!

The article that appeared in the John O'Groat Journal and Caithness Courier on 16th July reported a more conservative crowd of 60 and detailed the order of the ceremony.

Councillor Dugald Campbell, Strathy played 'Lord Lovat's Lament' on the pipes. Joseph Mackay, Talmine Strathnaver Museum Director and Vice Chair of Caithness District Council introduced Caithness District Convener John Young who offically opened the museum. Mr Young said the opening was 'the realisation of a dream for many people on the North Coast' praising the dedication of the local folk who brought it about. The photo below is from the opening.

Do you have any memories or photos from the early days of Strathnaver Museum? We'd love to hear about or see them! Feel free to PM, comment below or email us at [email protected]

Over 2026 we will be celebrating the past achievements of all those who have made Strathnaver Museum what it is today, while also looking to the future of what you want your museum to be today and into the future.

Last chance to see Gu'an the fish n' that By Beverley Carruthers which finishes 6th June!

Gu’un the fish n’that, inspired by the cultural heritage of the women who worked as migrant workers in the herring industry, is an evocative sound installation by East Anglian based artist Beverley Carruthers.

Inspired by the story of her own Grandmother Barbara Aliston, Beverley compiled in depth interviews with the last generation of Fesh Quines exploring their stories through the labour and living conditions they endured alongside their enriching living history and cultural legacy of knitting and singing. Beverley has expertly woven these elements into this engaging and fascinating sound installation.

Beverley’s work resists the romanticised version of the herring girls history, which has often been marginalised anyway, instead celebrating the women’s migrant labour and their importance to the fishing industry.
