Keeping skills sharp for when the community needs us most.

Last Monday (9 March), the crew from Tillicoultry Fire Station took part in a domestic building training scenario at Alloa Fire Station alongside colleagues from Alloa Wholetime White Watch.

The scenario allowed recently qualified firefighters FF Hutcheson and FF Barclay to put their newly developed Breathing Apparatus (BA) skills into practice while working alongside more experienced colleagues in a realistic operational environment.

Training like this is invaluable for building confidence, teamwork and decision-making in situations that closely reflect the types of incidents we may face within our communities.

Also operating during the exercise as Incident Commander was our newly appointed Crew Commander Doyle, who used the scenario as an opportunity to further develop and refine his incident command skills.

A big thank you to Alloa White Watch for hosting the exercise and for the continued collaboration between our on-call and wholetime crews. đźš’

Training Update – Tillicoultry Fire Station

Over the past few training nights, the crew at Tillicoultry have been focusing on an important piece of equipment that doesn’t always get much attention, but can be absolutely critical when it’s needed — Breathing Apparatus guidelines.

Guidelines are a simple but vital piece of equipment used during breathing apparatus operations, particularly at large or complex incidents such as industrial buildings or ships. They help firefighters maintain orientation and safely find their way through challenging environments where visibility is poor and structures can be confusing.

It’s one of those basic skills that might not always be in the spotlight, but when the situation calls for it, it can make a huge difference to firefighter safety and effective search operations.

The crew have been carrying out this training alongside colleagues from Red Watch and White Watch at Alloa Fire Station, which has been a great opportunity for on-call and wholetime firefighters to work together, share knowledge and strengthen operational teamwork.

A big thanks to everyone involved — and we’re looking forward to more joint training activities in the near future. 🚒

🚒 9 Years of Service – Thank You, Colin! 🚒

At the end of January 2026, Crew Commander Colin Dobson stood down from his on-call role at Tillicoultry Fire Station after 9 years of dedicated service to our local community.

Colin has decided the time is right to hand back his pager to focus more on family life and other commitments. However, he hasn’t stepped away from the Fire Service altogether — during his on-call career he successfully secured a move to the Wholetime Fire Service, which is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to his commitment and professionalism.

Colin, thank you for your commitment and the countless hours you’ve given in support of the station and the community. We wish you every success in your continued career and the next chapter ahead. 👏🚒

As we look back on the 2025 at Tillicoultry Fire Station, it’s fair to say that this time last year the outlook felt a little bleak.

We were working hard to increase our firefighter numbers, and recruitment was a real concern. I’m pleased to say the response from the community was excellent, with a strong number of applicants coming forward. From that process, we successfully recruited two new firefighters.

FF Barclay and FF Hutcheson both completed their initial two-week training course and are now regularly turning out with the crew and attending incidents — a real boost for the station and the community we serve.

We also said a fond farewell to FF Hearsum, who recently hung up his kit after an incredible 19 years of dedicated service. His commitment, experience, and sacrifice over nearly two decades will not be forgotten. We also welcomed Wholetime FF McCrorie, who joined us for a few months and was a valued addition to the team during that time.

Looking ahead, we’re continuing to build for the future.

After 19 years of dedicated service, FF Hearsum has decided to retire from Tillicoultry Fire Station.

On behalf of the crew and the wider community, we want to say a heartfelt thank you for the countless hours given in service, the commitment shown time and again, and the many family moments missed when the pager activated and duty called. That level of dedication does not go unnoticed.

You’ve been a valued colleague, a dependable firefighter, and a credit to the station. Your contribution over nearly two decades has helped keep our community safe, and that legacy will remain long after your last turn-out.
Enjoy your very well-earned stand down — you’ve more than earned it. 🚒👏
