✨A Glimpse into Tintagel’s Past✨📜📸

Step back in time to discover Tintagel as it was more than 125 years ago!

Earlier this year, an old photograph album was acquired by Dr Sue Andrew.
Dating from the final decade of the 19th century, the album contains a fascinating collection of photographs recording places across the South West, including Dartmoor, Tavistock and North Cornwall.

The photographs are believed to have been taken by Thomas Vanstone (1840–1918), who worked for the Tavistock Gazette.

Vanstone was born in Buckland Monachorum and became a printer before later managing the newspaper, while also running a grocery business. Although some of his photographs were used by William Crossing and Beatrix Cresswell to illustrate their books, his work as a photographer is not widely known.

A selection of these remarkable images of Tintagel and the surrounding villages within the parish has now been put on temporary display at Tintagel Visitor Centre.

The photographs offer a wonderful glimpse into the landscape, buildings and everyday life of our area at the end of the 19th century — places that will be familiar, yet wonderfully different from the Tintagel we know today.

✨Our Heritage Rubbing Discs Are Back In Place! ✨

They’re here at the Tintagel Visitors Centre — ready for visitors to discover, create and take home their own little piece of Tintagel’s history. 🏰

With a very special thank you to our very own Councillor Marcus May, who personally created a new plinth and base for the discs. 👏🏼🔧👏🏼.

A fun, hands-on way for children and adults alike to connect with Tintagel’s fascinating heritage — creating a lovely souvenir to take away with you, or leave behind to pin on the display wall inside.

Report from Cllr Garrigan

My plan for improving mobile signal coverage

One issue residents have raised with me since being elected is poor mobile phone coverage. I’m pleased to announce that Cornwall Council has adopted a plan I have for improving mobile phone coverage. Following a successful pilot project in St Tudy and Tintagel, Cornwall Council is now rolling out my plan with a countywide survey, using equipment fitted to refuse collection vehicles. As bin lorries travel their normal routes, they'll gather data on signal strength across Cornwall, helping to identify “not spots” and build the evidence needed to push for improvements. Providing a practical way of tackling a problem that affects many rural communities.

Full Council 21st July.

At the last full Council meeting there was a Motion giving a vote of no confidence in SWW, with recommendations to make it a Public Benefit Company or Nationalised. This was widely supported and will result in the Leader writing to Ofwat and the Minister.

Town and Country Planning Regulations 2026

At our Constitution and Governance Committee on 9th June 2026, Members considered the constitutional changes required to ensure compliance with the National Scheme of Delegation arising from the above regulations, and agreed to recommend them to our full Council. However, the Committee also expressed its concern and displeasure in doing so, and so also resolved to recommend to our Full Council that the Leader write to convey concerns over the loss of democratic oversight and the restriction on Member call in powers.

Trevena Square Resident Parking Permits
Following complaints from residents about limited parking availability in Trevena Square, it has been identified that some individuals are not complying with the site parking rules: no overnight parking, a maximum stay of two hours, and no return within two hours. Councillors have been monitoring the site and observed the same vehicles parked overnight, and during the working day, in breach of these rules.
The Council politely asks that all parking rules are followed, vehicles are not left overnight, and residents observe the two-hour daytime limit so that all Tintagel residents can use the car park.
It has also been noted that many permits do not clearly display a registration and/or permit number. Please come to the Visitors Centre any day between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to obtain a new permit. A new permit is also required if you have changed vehicle.
Confirmation that you pay Council Tax for a property in the Parish of Tintagel will be required so please bring a copy of your current Council Tax Bill with you.
Councillors are consulting with Cornwall Council to identify a long-term solution. This could include introducing a Parking Order and, potentially, a Service Level Agreement to support future monitoring and management of the car park. We regret that these measures are being considered, but they have become necessary because of the continued misuse of the facility.
