This week we celebrate the one-year anniversary of our Watch Manager, Mark Sams.

Mark joined the Tiverton Fire Station in 2010 as a Firefighter and progressed through the ranks before starting his role as Watch Manager on 1 June 2025. Taking over from a long-serving predecessor, the initial transition period could have been challenging, but Mark's approach to the role and commitment to the team ensured everything was seamless.

Over the past year Mark has been happy to give others opportunities to develop. Through his open and approachable leadership style, he encourages people to take on more responsibility, ensures everyone has a voice, and supports positive changes within the station. Mark leads by example, combining a calm and positive presence with clear leadership, ensuring everyone feels valued, supported, and heard.He has made a significant contribution to the station, and we would like to thank him for his hard work, commitment, and leadership.

When you join Devon And Somerset Fire And Rescue Service as an On-Call Firefighter and completed all of the initial assessments and training you then go into a development stage.
This normally takes around 2 years, which consists of lots of training, assessments and learning skills on the job.
A great time period for any newer recruit in the making and sets them off on a great path for their ongoing career within the Service.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our own Ff Kay Sawyer who has recently completed her Development programme and is now a fully Competent Firefighter!

A crew took part in today’s park run helping with the warm up and cheering on all those taking part as well as running it themselves. Well done to all those who took part today.

Tiverton Fire Station would like to introduce our newest recruit.
FF Chard-Maple

FF Chard-Maple has recently completed his initial recruits course which meant learning new skills. These included pumps and ladders, safety at height, RTC and BA.

At a recent passing out parade FF Chard-Maple was awarded the silver axe & the recruits recruit award.

On Tuesday evening a crew from Tiverton , along with colleagues from Wellington Fire Station , Williton Fire Station , Taunton Fire Station and Yeovil Fire Station
took part in an electric car fire exercise within Paul street multi storey car park. Crews turned up and were faced with smoke issusing from the 2nd floor & worked well together to set into the dry riser backed up by a hydrant to allow BA teams to commit to the multi storey to fight the simulated fire. Whilst crews were working hard from within the ALP set up to rescue a casualty from the top of the multi storey. All crews worked really well together with a high pressured dynamic scenario.
A big thank you to the Orchard centre & Somerset county council for allowing us the opportunity to use this venue for an exercise.

Fire Control have received multiple calls about a fire at The Promise School in Dartmoor View, Okehampton. Flames and thick black smoke could be seen from a distance. DSFRS spent most of Christmas Day dealing with a large heathland fire near West Anstey, Exmoor.

A crew from Dulverton was mobilised to smoke seen coming from the ridge of West Anstey Common.

Upon arrival the crew confirmed a 60 metre fire front and requested a second Pump.

Over time this was then escalated to 6 Pumps and a Water Carrier, as well as a number of Specialist Officers and two ATVs.

The fire is now believed to have been extinguished and crews have left the scene.
