Hand reared, raised and cared for in captivity by humans, when these ducks were suddenly released into the wild last summer, they had no survival skills. Life had been easy, and suddenly, over night, it was scary and confusing. Gone was the safety of the pen and food at a regular time, monsters with sharp teeth lurked in the shadows to drag you away and above in the sky with talons and cruel beaks to grab you in the day. Loud machines with wheels speeding along the road, could hit you and kill you in an instant. The people came back, and they put down food but the dangers remained, in fact, the dangers increased because on some days the people didn’t just feed you, they tried to scare you into the air by waving sticks at you (except, no one had taught you how to fly because you weren’t brought up by your own duck parents, had only been surrounded by other ducklings your own age and was spectacularly crap at it) and then they shot at you with guns and chased your injured bodies with dogs. Born to die, a living target for an afternoon’s recreation - but these ones have been saved that fate. Rescued and rehabilitated, these little duckies have learned in a safe environment how to be a good duck, a safe duck, a happy duck. Help us continue to be there for animals that need us by contributing to their supplies. Link in the comments
