from 1939 to 1983. HMS Fisgard, a naval establishment for the training of All Artificer Apprentices in the Royal Navy. It was initially sited in Victorian hulks in Portsmouth Harbour 1905-31, Chatham 1932-39, Torpoint 1939-83 and Fisgard Squadron from 1983. The name is derived from a 44 gun frigate of 1,180 tons captured from the French on 9th March 1797 after taking part in an attack on Fishguard. It uses the Welsh spelling.

CPO David Swanson (instructor at HMS Fisgard 1978-82) crossed the bar on 28 July 2025.

His son Andrew Swanson has kindly provided a Division class photograph from that time and a later image (David is on the left.)

Jennie Strudwick : My father charge chief petty officer gordon george strudwick who served at fisgard till the day it closed.. Started Liskeard RNA and the programe supporting new recruits at Raleigh passed away June 10th 2024.. He leaves a wife Nancy who he cared for many years with advanced alzhimers...

He served on the glamorgan 1969 then i was born july 69 where i was then christened on the glamorgan. He is going to sea with the navy june 10th where he will always been in the water. X

Yes by all means.. Sorry its taken so long to inform but im really struggling.. He loved his time at fisgard and so did i.. Duties over christmas, the pool, parade ground on my bike, rounds with dad, hanging off the bell in the workshop, rifle range and running down the accomadation blocks banging on all the doors till finally we got caught and thrown in the big concrete water troughs, just wow i had a hell of a childhood thats not even 20% the navy contributed to my life. X

CCMEA(P) Jim Selwood BEM: Crossed the Bar 11th Aug 23, aged 84.
He was a instructor at Fisgard between Oct 1977- July 1980 also Feb 83 to July 84.
If anyone knows of crew that would of served within, could you please pass on our sad news. Thank you David Selwood (WO2 ET (MESM) retired).

Crossed the Bar: message from family.
Just like to inform Old HMS Fisgard Comrades that my Father, CCMEA(P) Jim Selwood BEM passed away after a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer on Friday 11th Aug 23, aged 84. He was a instructor at Fisgard between Oct 1977- July 1980 also Feb 83 to July 84. If anyone knows of crew that would of served within, could you please pass on our sad news. Thank you David Selwood (WO2 ET (MESM) retired).
