Bank Holiday! | Have a safe TRIP

Whether you’re leaving the south west or coming to visit, have a safe and enjoyable summer holiday road trip.

Follow the T.R.I.P. checks every driver needs to perform to keep themselves, their passengers and other road users safe.

TOP UP your fuel or battery, oil and screen wash
REST with planned stops of at least 15 minutes every two hours
INSPECT tyre pressure, tread depth and for cracks or tears before setting out
PREPARE for all weather conditions…it may be very hot, or we may have rain and thunderstorms

We’ll add that SPEED limits are there for your safety, they are not a target. Drive within the limit and to prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions. So, TRIPS: as easy to remember as TRIP.

🚗 Have a great bank holiday! 😎

The Torquay Neighbourhood Team proactively seek orders to safeguard individuals and reduce repeat offending but the enforcement of these orders is equally important to hold people to account.

On Monday the 24th of August 2 individuals breached different orders in Torquay.

Patricia SHORTHOUSE, 67, breached a civil injunction which bans her from entering Torbay. SHORTHOUSE was arrested, charged and remanded to court. At court the following day SHORTHOUSE was remanded into custody for a hearing on the 1st of September 2026 at Plymouth County Court.

Thomas COOK, 46, breached a partial closure order at a residential address in Torquay. COOK was arrested, charged and remanded to court. At court the following day COOK plead guilty to breaching the closure notice and was sentenced to 4 weeks imprisonment.

The Neighbourhood team were thankful to our patrol colleagues on E-section who dealt with both these matters during a busy shift responding to numerous other 999 calls and other demands.

Following a number of arson incidents at the former Sherwood Hotel earlier this year, officers from the Torquay Neighbourhood Team have been carrying out extensive enquiries.

In an attempt to reduce the amount of trespassers to the building, a Community Protection Notice (CPN) was served. This was served after much liaison with the hotel owner to ensure that steps were taken to secure the premises. This included boarding up the building to prevent unauthorised access and reduce the risk of further antisocial behaviour, arson and ensure public safety.

The hotel owner, Bashir Rana, of Belgrave Street, London, has since been charged with failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice.

He is due to appear before Newton Abbot Magistrates' Court on 10 September 2026.

As criminal proceedings are now active, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time
