Meet the Great Tit (Parus major), spotted regularly on the trackside and in the woodlands surrounding the cliff railway. Sporting a glossy black head, white cheeks, and a bright yellow belly, this clever bird looks like it is wearing a tiny tuxedo. You can easily tell the males and females apart by the black stripe on their chest, which is much wider on the males. They are incredibly vocal, with dozens of different sounds. While they hunt for caterpillars and insects in the spring, they rely heavily on garden feeders for seeds and suet during the winter. If you want to host a family in your garden, they love nesting boxes with a precise 28 mm entrance hole. Keep your eyes and ears open for these yellow bellied beauties on your next visit to us.
