✍️ Whenever we lead a rewilding tour or retreat, we try to finish by reading a poem. One we often return to is The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry, and with the sad news of Berry's passing we've been feeling quiet and reflective, thinking of the impact this brilliant mans words have had on so many. Jack shared his reflection this morning:

"I think the reason it resonates with so many people is that it captures implicitly what people feel in that moment; the restorative power of nature and why we love and cherish it so much.

We hosted a Biodynamic gathering at the farm a couple of years ago. At this gathering Bou, who used to run the farm that was biodynamic at the time, and supported so many of the adults with learning difficulties who came here under Robert Owen Communities, returned to the farm for the first time since he left 10 years prior. He read this poem. I found it a deeply emotional experience, and cried. What I experienced in that moment and what has stuck with me ever since was a sense of acceptance, of connection, of heritage and a sense of place.

But most of all I think it was a profound and shared love of nature. The power of poetry transcends, and Wendell Berry was a master. Rest in peace, the peace of wild things." 💚

🦋 Sir Winston Churchill, the UK's World War II Prime Minister attempted to reintroduce the Black-veined white butterfly to his garden at Chartwell NT . He was a big fan of butterflies. His attempt was unsuccessful but it’s why it is sometimes known as "Churchill’s butterfly”.

Simon from Ambios added “It's amazing to think that the Black-veined white we are seeing in the wild in Devon are the offspring of the adults we carefully bought back from France last year and they are now part of the story of the return of this magnificent butterfly after an absence from the county of over 160 years. While we’ll be releasing them on suitable farmland in Devon, they are a very mobile species and likely to visit nearby gardens and vegetable patches - in that sense they are really the people’s butterfly, perhaps mirroring some of the persona of Winston Churchill." 🦋

📸: Photos from Ambios' trip to Normandy last year to collect butterflies to bring back to our sites in Devon for a captive breeding programme.

🌿 Where could our Nature Recovery Traineeship take you?

One of the best things about our traineeships is seeing where people go next. Our alumni have gone on to all sorts of roles since leaving Ambios, with each finding their own unique way of working for nature.

We’re always so proud to see what they’re up to, and this autumn we’ll be sharing a few of their stories and finding out where their time at Ambios has taken them. These are just a couple of our brilliant alumni to start us off.

Our traineeships are about building practical skills, knowledge and confidence, so you can take the next step towards a career that you care about. Want to see where a traineeship could take you? Find out more via the link in our bio. 🌱
