Ffoslas Farm

Ffoslas Farm We live at Ffoslas Farm and since moving here we've been amazed at the amount of wildlife in the area.

A year or so ago I started to record what we've seen and heard which has shown what a special place Ffoslas and Trimsaran is. Birds alone we've seen 7 Red list endangered species plus 11 Amber listed. Reptiles 1 endangered species and 2 endangered mammals and there's probably more rare flora and fauna waiting to be discovered.

A few of May's highlights which included nearly 20 new Moth species as well as well as quite a few other insects and plants.
Due to the southerly winds there has been a big influx of migrants from north Africa and Europe including lots of Painted Ladies, Red Admirals and lot's of different Moths.
All in all a good month bring total Moths ID'd to 377 and all species to 1069

Up at 5 this morning to check the moth trap, quite a few new species but the highlight has got to be the Fox Moths. We've found the caterpillar several times, they overwinter and can often be seen out on sunny days but we've never come across the adult moths.
The male and female are different in colour and size with the female being the larger, luckily we had both and they left some little presents that I'll try and rear through over the summer.

The Guelder-rose (Viburnum opulus) is in full flower at the moment and the Viburnum Beetle larvae are out in force eating the leaves so lots of food for the birds.
Come Autumn the berries will be another source of food for the birds. Apparently although toxic to us raw once cooked they are OK and can be used as a Cranberry alternative. Think I'd rather leave themn for the birds.

To some it would be classed as a w**d but to me our native Red Campion is beautiful and is putting on a lovely show at the moment. Not only is it a nectar source for butterflies but the seeds heads are the caterpillar foods for several species of moths including the Lychnis. It's happy in a sunny border or in semi-shade.
I've got a few seedlings coming up if anyone would like one.

This young Magpie spends a lot of time around the pond. Thought at first it was just having a drink but it seems to be catching something but the minute I get the camera out it flies off. We had a crow a few years back that learnt how to catch pond snails, we found dozens of empty shells around the pond.

Found a lovely clump of Turkey Tail funghi (Trametes versicolor) on one of the Willow trees. These are reported to have lots of health benefits when dried and powered..something I'll have to look into.

We've been busy the last few day, in the Polytunnel Chris has been pricking out the Leeks as well as w**ding the veggie plot and I've been mostly potting on beans. I've got a bit carried away this year as well as the 5 different beans we grew last year (Runner, French and 3 drying beans) I'm trying out another 4 drying beans including Cannellini and Haricot.
The tomatoes are doing well and a few have flower buds already.
In the house the peppers are growing as are the cucumbers and courgettes but I need to pot them on and I'm running out of space.

As it was a warm night and the wind had dropped I took a chance on the moth trap Tuesday night. Pleasantly suprised with 110 moths of 25 species including 3 new ones.
