⭐Trowbridge Town Council would like to wish everyone a happy Wiltshire Day!⭐

We asked the Mayor of Trowbridge, Stewart Palmen, he thoughts on Wiltshire Day.
'Wiltshire Day is a chance to reflect on our wonderful home county. For me Wiltshire is the people and the countryside symbolised by the White Horses seen across the ridgeway. Wiltshire is a lovely place to live and be a part of a wonderful community.

Now as Mayor of Trowbridge I am very conscious that Trowbridge is “The County Town” of Wiltshire and has been since 1889 when Wiltshire County Council was created. Prior to 1889 Wiltshire uniquely lacked an undisputed historic capital. While Wilton served as the ancient county town, its influence had faded, and county business had been scattered between Devizes, Salisbury, and Wilton. Trowbridge was chosen to be the new county town for a variety of reasons. Firstly it was chosen because it is geographically central to Wiltshire but it is close to the Somerset border. Secondly it was chosen because of it’s good transport links, primarily the railway.

Thirdly it was a Town that was doing very well throughout the industrial revolution using steam to power it’s mills becoming a major producer of textiles, the so called “Manchester of the West”. Fourthly Trowbridge had a good court system and reputation of judging cases fairly. Court Street used to have several courts actively judging cases as well as pubs and our Old Town Hall was used as a court.

So Trowbridge became the County Town of Wiltshire and County Hall was constructed in 1939 to house the Counties administration. I am proud to be the Mayor of our County Town and continue to promote our town for investment within Wiltshire so we can all have a County Town we are proud of.

Wiltshire has only relatively recently gained a County Flag and this was designed in 2007 by graphic designer Helen Pocock, based on concepts developed by her father, Mike Prior, a Trowbridge Resident. It features The Bustard and Green and White Stripes. It became the official flag of Wiltshire on 1st December 2009 and will be flown over The Civic on Wiltshire Day the 5th of June.'
