๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Know the Signs of a Rip Current ๐Ÿ’™

Rip currents can be difficult to spotโ€”but knowing what to look for can save your life.

โœ… Ask your child:
Do you know how to spot a rip current?

๐Ÿ‘€ Signs of a rip current:

A channel of choppy or rough water between calmer waves

A gap in the breaking waves

Water that looks darker (deeper) than surrounding areas

Foam or debris moving quickly out to sea

๐Ÿšจ What to do if you get caught in a rip current:

๐Ÿซ Stay calm โ€“ donโ€™t panic

You wonโ€™t be pulled under, just carried out

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Float to live

Lie on your back and control your breathing

โ†”๏ธ Donโ€™t fight it

Donโ€™t try to swim back against the current

๐ŸŠ Swim parallel to the shore

Once free, head back to the beach at an angle

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Raise your hand and shout for help

Lifeguards can spot and assist you quickly

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Talk to your child about why this is important:

Fighting the current can quickly exhaust even strong swimmers

Staying calm keeps you safe and helps you think clearly

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œWhat do you think you should do first if a current starts pulling you out?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Swim between the red and yellow flagsโ€”lifeguards place these away from rip currents.

Stay aware, stay calm, and stay safe at the beach ๐ŸŒŠ

Swimming lessons are one of the most important things parents can do to keep children safe and happy in the water. โญ

If your child isnโ€™t in lessons, start now. If they are, keep them going. โฌ…๏ธ

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Drowning Prevention Month: Know Your Beach Flags ๐Ÿšฉ

Heading to the beach? Understanding the flags could save your life ๐Ÿ’™

โœ… Ask your child:
Do you know what the different beach flags mean?

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag โ€“ Danger!

Do NOT enter the water

Strong currents or hazardous conditions

๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸจ Red & Yellow Flags โ€“ Safe Area

Lifeguarded swimming zone

Always swim between these flags

โฌ›โฌœ Black & White Flag โ€“ Surf/Craft Zone

For surfboards, kayaks, and inflatables

Not safe for swimmers

๐Ÿ‘€ Talk to your child about why flags matter:

They show where itโ€™s safest to swim

Lifeguards monitor flagged areas

Conditions can change quickly

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œWhich flag would you choose if you wanted to swim safelyโ€”and why?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Always check the flags when you arrive and swim between the red and yellow ones.

Letโ€™s stay safe and enjoy the seaside the right way ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Stay Calm, Stay Safe ๐Ÿ’™

Key Water Safety Message #4: Cold Water Shock โ€“ What to do if you fall in

Falling into cold water can be a real shock to the bodyโ€”even for strong swimmers โ„๏ธ
Knowing what to do can save your life.

โœ… Ask your child:
What would you do if you suddenly fell into cold water?

๐Ÿ’ก Remember: Float. Breathe. Relax.

๐Ÿซ Breathe

Fight the gasp reflexโ€”take slow, steady breaths

Keep your airway above the water

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Float

Lean back, spread your arms and legs

Let your body adjust to the cold water

๐Ÿ˜Œ Relax

Stay as calm as possible

Once breathing is under control, signal for help or plan how to get out safely

๐Ÿšซ Donโ€™t panic or thrash about

This uses energy and makes it harder to breathe

Cold water can quickly drain your strength

๐Ÿ‘€ Talk to your child about why this matters:

Cold water can take your breath away in seconds

Staying calm helps you stay afloat and think clearly

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œCan you show me how you would float if you fell in?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Remember: Float to live โ€“ breathing first, then think what to do next.

Letโ€™s give children the skills to stay calm and survive ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Be Ready to Help Safely ๐Ÿ’™

Key Water Safety Message #3: Know what to do if someone is in trouble in the water

Itโ€™s vital children and young people understand that helping doesnโ€™t mean putting themselves in danger โš ๏ธ

โœ… Ask your child:
What would you do if you saw someone struggling in the water?

๐Ÿ’ก The safest response:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ SHOUT for help

Get an adult or lifeguard straight away

Call emergency services (999) if needed

๐Ÿ›Ÿ REACH or THROW โ€“ donโ€™t go!

Use something long (a stick, towel, clothing) to reach them

Throw something that floats (lifebuoy, ball, bottle)

๐Ÿšซ Never jump in to rescue them

Even strong swimmers can get into difficulty

Panicking people can accidentally pull rescuers under

๐Ÿ‘€ Talk to your child about why this is important:

Staying safe means they can actually help

Trained rescuers know how to act safely

Going in without help can make the situation worse

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œCan you think of something nearby you could use to help without getting in the water?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Remember: Shout, Reach, Throw โ€“ and never go!

Letโ€™s build confidence AND safety skills that save lives ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Stay Safe Together ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Key Water Safety Message #2: Always go with an adult when near water

Water can be unpredictableโ€”having a responsible adult nearby makes all the difference ๐Ÿ’™

โœ… Ask your child:
Why is it safer to go near water with an adult?
Great answers might include:

Adults can spot danger quickly

They can help in an emergency

They set safe rules and boundaries

They know when itโ€™s safe (or not safe) to get in

๐Ÿ‘€ Talking to teensโ€ฆ
We know independence grows, but so does risk.

โš ๏ธ Peer pressure can be real around water
Encourage teens to think about:

Saying no to risky dares (like jumping into unknown water)

Sticking together AND making sure a trusted adult knows where they are

Looking out for friendsโ€”not encouraging unsafe behaviour

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œWould you feel confident speaking up if something didnโ€™t feel safe?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
No matter the ageโ€”children and teens should always let a responsible adult know where they are and avoid water activities alone.

Letโ€™s empower young people to make smart, safe choices ๐Ÿ’™
