Part of Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2026: Arlodhes a Shalott is a beautiful and atmospheric new song-cycle by Matthew Thomason for piano, soprano voice and cello, inspired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Lady of Shalott.

The work is performed in Kernewek, using Elizabeth Ellis’s Cornish translation of Tennyson’s poem. It brings this familiar story to life through the Cornish language, exploring themes of isolation, longing and the fragile boundary between reality and reflection.

The production also brings together some fantastic local Cornish talent in the cast and creative team, helping to bring this distinctive work to the stage.

Special Pre-show Yeth an Werin / Cornish Language Conversation Group

Come along, grab some food and a drink, and join us for a special pre-show Yeth an Werin before a fantastic night of Cornish entertainment.

Never spoken Cornish before? Come along! Hear Cornish being spoken, have a go at saying a few things yourself, or just come along for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere. Everyone is welcome, from complete beginners to fluent speakers. We are a friendly bunch!

The Yeth an Werin will be a great way to start the evening before Anna Anise launches her new bilingual album, Aneth, a few minutes walk away at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Wesley Street at 7.30pm. Anna's show kicks off the fantastic Celtic Lowender Festival in Redruth.

Anna's Aneth is a vibrant new collection of modern folk songs bringing English and Cornish together, rooted in her Cornish identity. For this special album launch, Anna will be joined by some of Cornwall's finest musicians, including Ben Sutcliffe , Lizzie Pridmore, Jon Fazal, Elizabeth Freeborn and Lukas Drinkwater, with more special guests. Anna will also be supported by Salt & Sky.

BBC Learn Cornish Podcast Wins Special Creativity Award

The BBC Learn Cornish podcast has been recognised with the Special Creativity Awen Award at the Gorsedh Kernow Awards in Bodmin.

The podcast was supported by the Cornish Language Office, with Sarah Buck acting as the Cornish language guide, and was hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenter Danni Diston.

Reflecting on the award, Buck said:
"We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award. We wanted to create something accessible, fun and relatable that would give complete beginners a taste of Cornish, to whet their appetites and tempt them in. And once we have got them, we have got them for life!

Awen means inspiration in Cornish, which feels particularly fitting for a podcast designed to inspire people to have a go at learning the language.

It was such a privilege to accompany Danni on her journey from not speaking a word of Cornish to being able to hold a conversation in just bite-sized 12 lessons. Hearing her now use words such as 'splann' on BBC Radio 1, and knowing that Cornish is reaching listeners across the UK, is something I am incredibly proud of.

We hope listeners have also discovered that Kernewek (Cornish language) is not as daunting as it can sometimes seem. Although we have not told them too much about those tricky mutations yet!

A huge thank you to our colleagues at BBC Radio Cornwall, all of our brilliant guests, my fantastic Cornish teacher Pat Parry, and everyone who listened, learned and simply had a go with us. We are excited about the future of Kernewek especially when we all work together on innovative and engaging projects like this.

And, of course, a special thank you to Danni, who continues to spread the Cornish language on the airwaves. We are so grateful to have her as an ambassador for the language."

💬​ Cornish (Kernewek) and Breton (Brezhoneg) speakers together in Lorient!

Earlier this month, Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2026 took place in Brittany (Breizh), celebrating the Year of Cornwall, where Cornish language and culture took centre stage for more than 700,000 visitors across 10 days.

One of the highlights was a Yeth an Werin (conversation group) bringing Breton and Cornish speakers together on the final evening.

There was a fantastic turnout, with lots of fascinating conversations about the similarities between our languages, our shared heritage and the possibilities for working together in the future.

It is thought that Cornish and Breton are closely related Brythonic languages. It is also thought that Cornish speakers settled in Brittany from around the 5th century onwards.
It was wonderful to see just how many connections remain between the languages today.

The Cornish Language Office looks forward to building these links with speakers in Breizh and developing more opportunities to share, learn and work together.

Esedhvos Kernow comes to Bosvena / Bodmin!

From 1st to 6th September, Bodmin will be celebrating Cornish language, culture, music, literature and heritage as part of Esedhvos Kernow, the Festival of Cornish Culture.

The Esedhvos is a fantastic celebration of Cornwall's culture and a chance to experience the Cornish language and traditions being celebrated live. At the heart of the week is the Bardic Ceremony, a very important part of Cornwall's cultural calendar, where 21 new bards will be welcomed into Gorsedh Kernow. There will be a chance to hear Cornish being spoken and celebrate those contributing to Cornish culture and language.

Join us for an afternoon exploring the longstanding links between Cornwall and Brittany, and the close relationship between the Cornish and Breton languages (in English).

Aleksandr Ar Gall is a Breton and Cornish speaker, Cornish teacher and Cornish Bard who will be visiting Penzance to launch his new bilingual book of Breton translations of old Cornish texts.

The presentation will include readings in both Breton and Cornish and will explore the fascinating story behind the book, including the collaboration between Morton Nance and one of the most significant Breton-language writers of the 20th century, with readings in both Cornish and Breton.

Free admission. All welcome!

Shoppa Ober Kernewek rag Tus Awenek / Cornish for Creatives Workshop!

Ever wondered how you could bring a little more Kernewek (the Cornish language) into your creative work? No previous experience needed!

Come along to the Hall for Cornwall on Wednesday 2 December from 10am to 12pm for a fun, practical introduction to using the Cornish language in your creative practice.

Whether you are a writer, artist, designer, maker or creative freelancer, this workshop will explore how Cornish can be used in branding, storytelling, signage, performance and creative projects.

During the workshop you will get:
- A whistle-stop tour of the language and its revival
- Useful Cornish phrases you can start using straight away
- Ideas and examples of how creatives are already using Cornish
- Information about ways to learn more
- The chance to get a line or phrase translated during the session

The workshop will be led by Elizabeth Ellis, a freelance Cornish translator and consultant who works with musicians, writers, playwrights, filmmakers and theatre companies to bring Cornish into their creative practice.
