Tynemouth Priory and Castle

Tynemouth Priory and Castle Tynemouth Castle and Priory Tynemouth Castle and Priory on the coast of North East England was once one of the largest fortified areas in England.
(905)

Overlooking the North Sea and the River Tyne, it dominates the headland. With its 2000 year history and beautiful views it is the perfect location for a family fun day out. The interactive 'Life in the Stronghold' exhibition takes you on an exciting journey. It tells the story of the site from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fo

rt and a coastal defence. The newly refurbished battery gun was designed to defend the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars and can be explored. Volunteers’ Week at Tynemouth Priory and Castle 🌿

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and we want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers at Tynemouth Priory and Castle.

Our visitor welcome and tour guide volunteers play such an important role in helping bring the site to life.

Whether it’s greeting visitors with a smile, sharing stories from the castle’s long history, helping out at our events, or helping people get the most out of their visit, you really do make each experience that extra bit special.

We’re incredibly grateful for everything you do, thank you for sharing your time, knowledge and passion with us and our visitors. 💙

Only two weeks to go until our Community Picnic ☀️

Join us for a relaxed afternoon by the coast with live music, garden games and a fantastic selection of food vendors, a truly perfect way to spend time with family and friends.

We will also be joined by the amazing Tynemouth Volunteer Lifeboat Brigade! 🚤

Their crew will be helping everyone learn more about water safety, what to do in an emergency and the important work they do along our coastline. It’s a brilliant chance for young visitors to ask questions, get involved and discover lifesaving skills in an engaging, hands-on way.

Sunday 14 June 2026

Free entry for members and residents of NE30, NE28, NE29, NE26 and NE25 (please bring proof of postcode). Dogs are welcome.

We’re saddened to report that Tynemouth Priory and Castle has experienced repeated incidents of trespassing this week, resulting in damage to this important historic site.

We know how much the Priory means to our local community and visitors, and we are asking for your support in helping us protect this special place for future generations.

If these incidents continue, we may have no choice but to close the moat area overnight to prevent further damage.

While we do not advise anyone to approach trespassers directly, if you witness suspicious activity or people entering restricted areas, please report it to Northumbria Police via 101. Your reports can make a real difference in helping us safeguard our shared heritage.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

We were pleased to see so many people enjoying Tynemouth Priory over the Bank Holiday weekend. ☀️

Unfortunately, we have had a few instances of disposable BBQs being used in the moat area, which has caused damage to the grass and surrounding space.

We kindly ask everyone to respect and help protect this important community space by not using disposable BBQs on site and by taking your litter to one of the many bins available at the front of the moat.

A huge thank you to members of the community who assisted with the clean-up this morning, your support is greatly appreciated 💚
