Llechfan Garden Railway

Llechfan Garden Railway Llechfan 16mm Garden Railway Built in the garden of the Llechfan volunteer hostel at Tywyn Wharf station on the Talyllyn Railway. we can find something for all!

Started in 2001 with a fairly basic circuit it has since progressed to become 2 interconnected circuits with a branch line under construction built to incorporate the buildings of the Compton Down Railway on 2009. At present it is mainly 32mm but there are plans to build an extensive 45mm system to feed the heavier industrial sites that make up a big part of Compton Down. We're always on the looko

ut for willing volunteers so if there's anything you fancy lending a hand with let us know... from weeding the dandelions to heavy drainage works.. To pay us a visit outside open days, drop us a line on how best to check with Talyllyn Control to get across the track safely over to the hostel side.

Excellent work from the Talyllyn Young Members that gave their time helping to get this back into useable condition. It has been a joy to spend time revamping the exhibits and have somewhere so splendid to put them back on display.

Door can be unlocked for high days & holidays, but having a nose through the glass possible at any time.

A fine selection of Steam Crane build photos - mostly from IoanCam, with a few of mine jumbled in randomly with erratic FB uploading. Am sure you will agree the Talyllyn Young Members that got involved with this have done a cracking job, rescuing the remnants from the hedgerow and repairing damage caused by heavy things dumped on it.

It was originally inspired when a driftwood boat-hatch was found on a river estuary walk, and the rest of the crane built from scrap parts underneath the hatch as a cab roof. Built by Peter Jones with help from Alan Walker of Triassic Models it stood over a pond as part of the Compton Down Railway. It was originally capable of pivoting, but have foregone that option in new Llechfan home so will be more stable in the presence of littler curious visitors. The crane jib indicator was a lovely new addition from Andrew Penny's amazing antiques emporium formally in Tywyn high street - a wonderful donation that has found its true destiny now!

An evening of two museums.

More photos will follow as sources can supply them - I didn't take many as too busy waffling at people, but am pleased to say that double museum opening went remarkably well. Huge thanks to Clan Coulls for their hugely appreciated words and eloquence, the newly YMG refurbed phone box & steam crane, along with the newly built Compton Down Railway Museum have been thoroughly celebrated.

Meths fired locos - this includes you!!!

In all seriousness, we would like to draw the attention of anyone likely to run little steam engines at Llechfan to the existence of watering cans which should be refilled if you find 'em empty and put where you can reach them easily.. These are on standby in case of any problems, as the bank and general environs at Llechfan are remarkably tinder dry. Please do check before running anything.

It is a very great pleasure to announce a special evening to celebrate the rededication of the Phone Box Railway Museum, August 19th 2026.

In recent weeks, noble and hugely appreciated efforts have been given by the Talyllyn Young Members Group to renovate our Telephone Box Railway Museum. It will be a delight to welcome Izzy & Anthony Coulls back to Llechfan to rededicate the newly renovated K6 box.

As bonus features, we also enjoy the beautifully restored Steam Crane (another Young Members' Group rebuild) and reopen the newly built 16mm scale Compton Down Railway Museum.

Garden open from 6pm, opening ceremony will commence once everyone ready after their various Talyllyn volunteering day shifts.

Circuits open as always for 16mm Association members & Talyllyn volunteers to run their trains.
