Sheffield Park and Garden NT

Sheffield Park and Garden NT A beautiful grade I listed landscape garden surrounded by parkland and woodland. Our historic parkland forms a larger footprint for the Sheffield Park estate.

The garden is a horticultural work of art formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of 'Capability' Brown and Humphry Repton. Four lakes form the heart of the garden, with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surrounding them. Each owner has left their impression, which can still be seen today in the layout of the lakes, the construction of Pulham Falls, the pl

anting of Palm Walk and the many different tree and shrub species from around the world. Dating back several centuries, it has had many uses including a deer park and WWII camp, and is now grazed with livestock and home to our natural woodland play trail in Ringwood Toll. The River Ouse runs across the bottom of the parkland and the original meanders are still visible winding across the meadow. This area has been transformed into a wildlife haven and is home to a diverse range of species including kingfishers, birds of prey, butterflies, and dragonflies.

Ancient, enormous, and impossible to ignore, the garden’s gunnera are looking their most impressive during the next few months.

🍃 With leaves large enough to shelter beneath and spiky stems that look almost otherworldly, this remarkable plant feels like a living reminder of the ancient landscapes that once covered the planet.

☀️ Did you know that the leaves can grow up to 3 metres across and the stems can reach 5 metres in height. In the autumn, the leaves die back and remain dormant over the winter. As we reach the warmer seasons, the leaves unfurl in the sunshine.

📍 You can find gunnera down Birch Grove lakeside along Lower Woman’s Way Pond or at the stream garden.

We have two species of gunnera in the garden. Gunnera tinctoria and Gunnera manicata, the latter of which is the larger of the two.

From March to November, our garden team carries out monthly moth surveys at Sheffield Park and Garden NT to monitor the species that call this special place home 🦋

The data helps us understand which species are thriving and where we can improve habitats to support biodiversity. Healthy moth populations are a great indicator of a flourishing ecosystem, and these surveys help shape the way we care for the landscape here.

Moths pictured: White Ermine, Peach Blossom, Light Emerald, Green Carpet, Scorched Wing, Alder Kitten, Orange Footman & Treble Lines.

Keep an eye out for a special summer moth ID walk with Charles Waters from the Sussex Moth Group and the team, where you’ll learn how to identify moths and support biodiversity at home.
