WHICH of these might be responding to your medical emergency?

When you call 999 or 111, a volunteer Community First Responder (CFR) may be dispatched by the North West Ambulance Service to attend on their behalf.

NWAS Furness Community First Responders are allocated only the most serious medical emergencies, using their own, unmarked cars to attend. No blue lights, no sirens, driving under the same road traffic rules as any member of the public.

Whenever a CFR is allocated, at least one ambulance with NWAS clinicians will also attend but it is quite likely that the CFR will arrive on scene first, assess and treat the patient within their scope of practice which includes oxygen administration and, in worse case scenarios, the use of a defibrillator and CPR.

So, if you do see an unmarked car displaying a sign that reads “Ambulance Service First Responder” or “Community First Responder” please be aware that it may be responding to a 999 call, just like an ambulance but without the blue lights and siren…
