🚰 Tackling the private water profiteers

At Hull's full Council meeting yesterday, Labour councillors backed a motion calling for the government to nationalise Yorkshire Water. Private profiteers have taken huge profits, while jacking up bills and polluting waterways.

🏖️ They failed to stand against the polluting private water companies, and abstained on a vote on nationalising water

🔍 They stuck up for absent Luke Campbell, put party before principle, and abstained on a vote for better scrutiny and delivery from the mayor

🛟Labour success on water safety!

👏At today's full Hull City Council meeting, councillors unanimously backed Jessica Smith and George's motion on water safety during the summer.

🏊‍♀️This means the Council will now set up a cross-party group for improving water safety education for kids, providing free weekly swimming access during the school holidays, and looking at bringing back a lido for East Hull!

RIP MITCH UPFOLD

Our thoughts are with Mitch's family and friends as we lay to rest a good comrade at Hull Crematorium today. Better known by many as the Head of the City's HCAL Leisure and Culture organisation, Mitch had been a Labour County Councillor and the Humberside County Council's former Deputy Leader in previous times. RIP to a good friend and dedicated public servant.

Today we lay to rest our brilliant, dedicated, wonderful friend Anita.Harrison, in a Civic funeral this morning at Hull Minster at 11am. It is a month on since the sad news. Thoughts are with the family and all her friends on this poignant day.

🛟 ACTION ON WATER SAFETY THIS SUMMER

This week is Drowning Prevention Week. On Thursday, Labour councillor Jessica Smith is proposing a motion to Hull's full City Council meeting on the topic of keeping our children and young people safe during the summer.

Sadly, we know 17 people have already drowned while open water swimming in the UK during last month's heatwave. We want the Council to:
- Provide free weekly access to swimming facilities during school holidays
- Look into reopening the lido at East Park
- Get Ennerdale Leisure Centre back open ASAP
- Support the "Don't Become a Memory" campaign

🚕 Today Labour councillor Karen Wood attended a meeting with Hull Licensed Drivers Alliance, to discuss taxi licensing.

As Labour councillors we share Hull taxi drivers' concerns about out-of-area private hire, and we've responded to the government consultation on this issue.

Passenger safety should always be the most important consideration for taxi licensing!

The other day Yorkshire's metro mayors met in Sheffield for the first meeting of the White Rose Rail board - but guess who wasn't there?

The mayors of West, South and North Yorkshire all signed up, but our own Luke Campbell pulled out last year, leaving East Yorkshire unrepresented in important discussions about Northern Powerhouse Rail.
