This is a nice red hawthorn I got recently. It always seems a shame to reduce a tree like this but a bonsai should be compact to maintain scale and structure and as it is this is far too bushy and leggy. It still needs reducing more to gain perspective and taper, but bonsai is the patient art - and that's especially important during such a hot summer!

I'm back doing beginner bonsai classes by the 26th July. My classes are between an hour and two hours and range between £10 for the class alone and £40 including your own tree and a pot for it, so you can design your own bonsai and pot it up on the day. I can come to you and do the class in the comfort of your own garden if you're local to Newton-le-Willows.

The trees that I sell are all outdoor trees which have been nurtured and designed by me and are all unique and healthy. Support a local community artist rather than buying something mass produced and unhealthy from a supermarket or hardware store!

Flowering bonsai are much less popular, mostly because the flowers compromise the sense of scale and they can be more challenging to look after. I have quite a few like this and it's so lovely to watch them bloom

If you do anything much to a tree before a storm, make sure to find a sheltered space for it! This one has a little tie to make sure it doesn't wobble the roots too much

This one is a case study in 'it always looks better in person'.

But photographs are useful because they always highlight every flaw and you need to see the flaws to improve them.

This was almost completely dead when I got it. It's going to be a beautiful bonsai - watch this space!

Beautiful day today!

When you're training a tree, it's ok to pot it at the wrong angle. Little trees need time to adjust to being a bonsai and that means patience and taking it in stages.

For some trees (not all!) it can be nice to suggest some grass, a hill, a small path, some soil erosion, or some other landscape features. You can do achieve this with just a little moss and akadama or other simple things. After all, the origin of bonsai is in Chinese penjing - miniature landscapes
