Provisional Met Office data shows this summer was the hottest ever on record.

Thousands of deaths due to dangerous heat. Crops destroyed by drought. Homes threatened by fires.

Labour must not approve Rosebank or Jackdaw in this new climate chaos.

No new oil and gas.

We are horrified at the recent post from Featherstone councillor, Jacob Paget.

Jacob, there were 1720 terminations in our district in the year you're quoting. 80 were for people under the age 18.

These are real people, Jacob. Making hard decisions.

They are our friends, family, and neighbours. They are our loved ones.

You are unfit to sit as Chair of the Adult Services and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee on behalf of the people of our district.

Will you be taking action on this Karl Johnson? Or will it be brushed under the carpet?

We call upon the Government to immediately cease the practice of designating new data centres as "critical infrastructure".

Classifying them along with vital sectors like energy, water and food - means that they are prioritised for access to water and energy - even in droughts like those we’ve seen this summer.

We say new data centres should receive planning permission only when they show they will meet the highest environmental standards and following full community consultation.

The Green Party is calling for a comprehensive national strategy for AI infrastructure prioritising:

✅ Community-led decision making

Local areas should have a say in where data centres are built.

✅ Environmental responsibility

Data centres should be built on brownfield sites close to renewable energy hubs and so that they can be powered, wherever possible, from 100 per cent renewable sources. All data centres should report audited annual figures on water and electricity consumption, and investment must prioritise less water-intensive cooling methods, energy efficiency and technology for capturing and redirecting waste heat for local heating.

✅ Digital sovereignty

The UK is currently dependent on foreign-owned infrastructure for critical services, from healthcare diagnostics to public safety. Furthermore, AI decisions are increasingly made by ‘black-box’ systems that are almost impossible to scrutinise. We need to develop and invest in UK AI infrastructure, with the focus being on more control, regulation and transparency.

Big banks are raking in bumper profits. And banks like Barclays are paying their executives egregious bonuses while people in towns across our district often don't even have access to a branch anymore.

The Green Party says that it is time to tax their excess profits and use this to fund a doubling of National Insurance support for small and medium sized businesses - an extra £10,500 to help squeezed businesses in places like our high streets that need it most.

Wakefield District Green Party campaigner, Matthew, says:

"Banks like Barclays are paying their executives, this year, bumper bonuses up 30%. And towns like ours, they don't even give us a branch. So it's time we taxed them. Let's have a windfall tax on these excess profits they're making."

It's time to tax big banks and back small businesses.

Come and help make it happen.

Violence against women and girls is a problem in all communities.

And one that we must all tackle together.

Thank you so much to all the organisations across our district that do so much to support and raise awareness on this important issue.

And an especially big thanks for the amazing work of Reclaim The Night Wakefield who do so much work to keep this issue in the public eye.

Violence against women and girls doesn't belong to one community.

We need universal education on consent, not Government messaging that fuels hatred towards migrants and people seeking asylum.

We must bring water back into public ownership. Now.

The Prime Minister chaired emergency briefings during the COVID pandemic. To great public good.

The Prime Minister needs to be hearing the calls from National Emergency Briefing and doing the very same today.

19/08/2026

The impacts of extreme heat are only going to become more common as the climate crisis remains untackled.

Our council must reconcider their decision to "undeclare" the climate emergency immediately.

We had an amazing day at the Wakefield Mela 2026.

Uniting events like these that bring neighbours together to celebrate culture, food, and family life are so important and something we will always proudly support.

We can't wait to be back again next year.

Hats off to the organisers for the best Wakefield Mela yet!
