Reform has chosen to not let any legal investigations take their course. It is demonising women and children, as well as men, many highly vulnerable and already traumatised.

This is not about justice, or community safety - this is scapegoating.

We are dismayed to see calls from Reform council leader, Karl Johnson, for the closure of the Springhill Close housing unit in Outwood.

Wakefield District Green Party councillor, Kate Dodd, says:

"The announcement from the Leader of the Council that Springhill Close in Outwood must close appears to be an admission that the council is giving up on trying to improve the management of the facility and support for the community through partnership with the police and the commissioning process.

This must be deeply unsettling for the staff and residents at Springhill Close. These residents are some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

I have deep sympathy with other residents who live nearby and are affected by antisocial behaviour. It sounds like a real problem for them. However, making the residents of Springhill Close homeless is not going to solve the problem.

It may shift the problem elsewhere in our community and it is likely to make it worse.

The council and police have worked together effectively in the recent past to address similar problems in Wakefield centre. It is worrying that Karl Johnson would rather sacrifice the people living and working in Springhill Close residential facility than address the behaviour and find a more sustainable solution for the people housed there."

This is a time for our district to come together to reflect, celebrate, and engage with the contributions of Black communities who have been fundamental to shaping and inspiring the UK’s culture and history.

Wakefield District Green Party are appalled, but not surprised, to learn that two Wakefield Reform Councillors are under investigation by West Yorkshire Police. This is following their well-publicised inappropriate and disturbing behaviour at the 18th July Love Music Hate Racism event in the Wakefield WX building.

Wakefield District Green Party Coordinator, Incy Wood, says:

"The Wakefield district deserves far better than to be led by councillors who demonstrate thuggish attitudes and a complete contempt for anyone who disagrees with them.

We hope both the Police and Council thoroughly investigate this incident. We know multiple complaints and evidence have been submitted to both organisations by witnesses.

These actions by Councillor Beddoes and Parker are remarkably similar to the attitudes and behaviours of Reform activists and representatives across the country, including the scenes at their recent annual conference and from the recently arrested (ex)Welsh Leader Dan Thomas.

Reform are a disgrace nationally, and, increasingly, a disgrace in Wakefield."
