Nick has become the first cardiac arrest survivor to swim 22 miles - the full length - of Loch Ness.

His achievement comes three years after he collapsed during the 2023 national open-water championships at Rother Valley in South Yorkshire. The event team pulled him from the water and performed CPR before the arrival of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

He's supporting the campaign and has spent the day at Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield, sharing his story and the importance of CPR to students.

It's Day! Today 800 off-duty staff and volunteers will teach CPR to 35,000 secondary school pupils across Yorkshire.

Last year, bystanders intervened in 1,972 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests across the region. Their immediate actions successfully contributed to restarting 643 hearts on the scene!

Just four days before Roger’s retirement, he collapsed and stopped breathing.

Luckily, a colleague saw what happened and raised the alarm immediately. In addition to the ambulance service being called, a colleague at neighbouring business sprang into action with an on-site defibrillator and started vital CPR on Roger.

Roger and his wife Lisa have now been reunited with everyone who helped to save his life.

Lisa said: "“We feel incredibly lucky to have had such amazing people around us when it mattered most, and it was a privilege to be able to thank you in person.”

Andrew was enjoying an evening of dancing with his wife Judith in April when he suddenly collapsed. He fell from his chair, became unresponsive and stopped breathing.

Three off-duty North Yorkshire Police Response Officers Jemima, Kyle and Oli immediately stepped in and performed CPR until the ambulance service arrived. Andrew was taken to hospital, where he spent seven weeks recovering.

Four weeks after he was discharged from hospital, Andrew and Judith attended one of our CPR and defibrillator familiarisation event in Steeton.

“We wanted to make sure that if we ever came across someone in cardiac arrest, we would know what to do and be able to make a difference,” he said.

They're now supporting the Day campaign which aims to improve cardiac arrest survival rates by giving people the confidence to step in and perform CPR.

Herbie was just 15 when his dad, Nigel, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at their home. Having learned CPR through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Herbie recognised that he needed to act and carried out continuous chest compressions for around eight minutes until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics used a defibrillator to restart Nigel’s heart, and he went on to make a good recovery.

Herbie now wants to share his story to help show people why learning CPR matters. He is also planning to fundraise for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity which supports the campaign, as a way of giving back and to boost CPR education.

Every year our Day volunteers visit schools across Yorkshire to teach thousands of students CPR. This Friday 800 of them will teach this lifesaving skill at 168 secondary schools across Yorkshire.

You don't need a manikin to learn CPR. A cushion, rolled up coat, stuffed toys or anything that recoils to it's original shape can be used to practice chest compressions.

You can also use our Pillow Partner training aid - a pillowcase with surface markings of the human thorax, as well as simplified instructions on what to do during an emergency including chest compressions, with translation into four different languages.

In 2017, Neil Davidson, from Halifax, survived a cardiac arrest thanks to his quick-thinking son, Oliver, who performed CPR until the ambulance crew arrived.

Oliver’s experience inspired him to retrain as a cardiac nurse and he now works at Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland, Australia.

Neil recently travelled to Australia for Oliver’s wedding — and while Neil was visiting, Oliver helped to save another life during a night shift. In an extraordinary coincidence, the patient was from Yorkshire and is now recovering thanks to Oliver’s actions.

From saving his dad’s life to caring for cardiac patients on the other side of the world, Oliver’s story is a powerful reminder that CPR skills can make all the difference.
