Friends of CHaT Parks The Friends of Clarence, Holmfield and Thornes Parks, Wakefield

The Group is independent of the Council and has set itself these aims and objectives:

To protect, create, develop and improve Clarence Park, Holmfield Park and Thornes Park as amenities for Wakefield

To encourage high standards of maintenance of the Parks and their facilities

To stimulate public interest and engender a sense of civic pride in the beauty, history and character of the Parks

To encourage wider use of the Parks by all sections of the community

The RSPCA Fun Day and Dog Show in Thornes Park will be on Saturday September 5th from 11am to 4pm, with the dog show starting at 12 noon. This is a rearranged date from June 27th when the RSPCA local branch decided that the ongoing heatwave was too severe for the show to go ahead.

This Sunday - September 6th - is the final car boot sale for the Friends of CHaT Parks. Sellers can arrive from 7am and buyers from 8 am to 12 noon. The entrance to the car boot sale is on the Denby Dale Road ( the same side as the Bandstand) where there is a banner, the postcode is WF2 8DY. The stewards will guide sellers to a space. No booking is necessary for sellers. The cost per vehicle is £10 car; £2 for a trailer and £15 for a van/car sideways. Exit onto Park Avenue. Items for sale should be second-hand. No knives or weapons.We look forward to seeing you then.

It's a busy week in the park this week. The pay and play games are open every day and equipment can be hired at the ticket office by the tennis courts.

On Monday evening there's a free session of Tag Rugby at the athletic stadium at 6pm.

On Tuesday morning the Walking Fit Group meet by the tennis courts at 9.30am.

If it's Wednesday it must be Weeding Wednesdays with the Friends of CHaT Parks and the Park gardener. Meeting from 1-3pm in the Flower Garden in Thornes Park just bring a trowel and gardening gloves and help keep our park beautiful.

At the weekend, the Wakefield Thornes parkrun meet on Saturday morning at 9am and the Wakefield Thornes junior parkrun meet on Sunday morning at 9.00am. Both groups meet at the car park near the children's playground.

Of course, Sunday afternoon wouldn't be the same without the wonderful Thornes Park Miniature Railway, Wakefield which runs from 1-4pm near the children's playground.

There's plenty to do in the park, or you could just stroll around and enjoy the flowers!

A different sport comes to the park today, 244 the August. There will be a free taster session of tag rugby at the Athletic Stadium at 6.45pm tonight. Wear comfortable sports wear and bring a water bottle. Footwear can be trainers but not boots with metal studs. This is a mixed sport and is played with two teams of 7.

Briefly, tag rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with Velcro patches and two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to rugby league or touch rugby, with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball, whilst defenders attempt to prevent them from scoring by ‘tagging’ – pulling one of the attackers’ Velcro-attached tags off.

At the Annual General Meeting at the Holmfield Arms on Wednesday July 29th, members of the Friends of CHaT Parks enjoyed a fascinating talk by historian and archaeologist David Weldrake on the history of the castle on Lowe Hill. He talked about the castle probably being built at some time in the mid 1100s during the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda. It certainly was in existence at the same time as the castle at Sandal across the River Calder as there is documentary evidence of Edward II giving the two castles to Richard de Moseley in 1324. Discussing its history to the present day Dave considered the future of the site.

Wakefield School of Tennis will be holding a children's summer camp at Thornes Park this month. It's from Tuesday 11th to Thursday 13th from 9am to 12 noon and then there's going to be a Fun Day on Saturday 29th August from 9.30-12 noon. This is a great opportunity for your children to learn a new sport, get fit and make new friends with a fantastic qualified coach. More information is on:
