🧭 Navigation Training!

On Monday evening, some of our newest recruits took part in a classroom-based navigation session as they continue their training to become operational Licensed Search Technicians.

The session covered the fundamentals of map reading, grid references and navigation skills, all essential when searching for missing people across a variety of environments.

While technology plays an important role in modern search and rescue, being able to navigate confidently using a map and compass remains a vital skill for our volunteers.

Another step forward for our latest recruits as they work towards becoming operational members of the team!

We are a 100% volunteer-run charity, and every donation helps keep us running and saving lives.

This weekend, some of our team attended the annual Lowland Rescue Conference and AGM, bringing together teams from across the country to elect national trustees and committee members, hear from some extraordinary guest speakers, and celebrate the achievements of volunteers at the annual conference dinner and awards ceremony.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Merseyside Lowland Search and Rescue received a commendation award in recognition of our team's dedication and involvement in the response to the tragic M53 coach crash in September 2023, presented by Simon Blagden CBE.

Our team was involved in the initial response to the incident, with casualties subsequently brought to our base at the Emergency Services Training Centre.

The ESTC is home to a specialist Hyperbaric Treatment Centre, equipped with medical treatment bays and intensive care facilities.

At the centre, our team worked alongside the Police, NHS and other emergency services, supporting casualties and their families during what was an incredibly difficult and distressing time.

This award is a fantastic recognition of the dedication, professionalism and compassion shown by everyone involved, particularly during such a challenging incident.

A huge well done to all our volunteers who were involved. We are extremely proud to receive this commendation and to have our team's contribution recognised nationally by Lowland Rescue.

Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the tragedy.

Important information from Merseyside Police 👇

🚨 We are urging the public to be vigilant as we have been made aware that people have received calls from scammers purporting to be Merseyside Police and asking for payment over the phone.

It was reported the calls appeared to be from a genuine Merseyside Police switchboard number, 0151 709 6010, but that the offenders had likely used caller ID spoofing. Most identified it as a scam and did not disclose sensitive information, but one caller did transfer a significant quantity of money.

👉 The offenders claimed to be officers or Cyber Crime officers from Merseyside Police and claimed someone had been arrested with the victim's ID, passport or personal details; that the victim was linked to a cyber crime investigation; that property had been seized during police riads containing the victim’s details and that cryptocurrency accounts had been compromised.

Using fake officer names, collar numbers and crime references, the offenders asked questions in an effort to extract information about cryptocurrency held, banking arrangements, personal details and online accounts.

An investigation is underway and CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out into the incidents.

Remember, the police will never ⬇️
❌ Ask you to move money
❌ Ask for passwords
❌ Ask for your bank account details

Never provide personal details to the person on the phone if you have any doubts over who is calling you. If you suspect someone is impersonating a police officer please contact us.

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation should message us on social media Merseyside Police Contact Centre quoting reference number 919 of 12 October.

We are pleased to announce that the team has been stood down following the missing person being located safe and well in one of the search areas in St Helens.

We were initially requested to assist with a stretcher carry-out however, the missing person was able to walk out of the area and be reunited with their family, which is always the outcome we hope for.

A big thank you to everyone who responded tonight, including our colleagues from Cheshire Search & Rescue Team for their support and assistance.

We are a 100% volunteer-run charity, and every donation helps keep us running and saving lives.

A huge thank you to Paul, one of our fantastic supporters, who recently took on the challenge of hiking up Helvellyn to raise money for our charity. 🥾

Paul has always been incredibly supportive of what we do. Through working alongside one of our volunteers in his day job, he has seen first-hand the work that goes on behind the scenes and has always praised the work of our volunteers. He has also supported every fundraising challenge we’ve taken on and donated along the way.

We know just how much this personal challenge meant to Paul, so to take it on while also raising money for MerSAR makes it even more special.

Paul put in many hours and days of training and preparation to get himself to the level needed to complete the challenge, particularly after experiencing a slight decline in his health which he has worked hard to overcome.

We’re incredibly proud of you Paul, and hugely grateful for your support.

Thank you Paul, it really does mean a lot to us.

We are a 100% volunteer-run charity, and every donation helps keep us running and saving lives.

A huge thank you to Louise and Irene, who braved the wind and rain a couple of weeks ago to raise funds for MerSAR at a boot sale!

Thanks to items kindly donated by friends and family, they raised an amazing £140 for the team. Every pound makes a difference and helps support our volunteers and the work we do across Merseyside and beyond.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who donated items, helped out, or turned up in the less-than-ideal weather to grab a bargain or two. Your support means a great deal to us.

Thank you!

Monday 6th July 2026

Monday night training this week consisted of drone focused training, with two of our pilots heading out alongside a number of the team and one volunteer acting as a missing person to practise skills from the sky.

The drone team learnt a lot from this scenario, putting their knowledge into practice, testing their equipment and developing their skills as they went.

Practice makes perfect and regular training ensures our team is ready to respond when called upon. 🚁

Well done team!
