Today we remember the courage, sacrifice and resilience of all those who served during the Second World War, both overseas and on the Home Front.

On VE Day, we reflect on the freedoms secured through their service and remember those who never returned.

Lest We Forget.

Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s Annual Community Meeting at the church. It was a valuable and productive evening, bringing together councillors from Wallingford Town Council and South Oxfordshire District Council, along with the Police and Crime Commissioner, to hear directly from residents.

It was particularly useful to discuss local concerns face to face, answer questions, and gather feedback. These conversations genuinely help shape the work we do as your council.

One of the key topics raised was the Wallingford Area Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which aims to support a safe and accessible environment for walking and cycling. It’s important to note that this plan helps guide future funding and projects, it does not automatically deliver them. Any individual schemes would still require separate approval and funding, and while accessibility is considered at every stage, the detail will depend on each specific project design.

Residents were also encouraged to report any falls or accidents via FixMyStreet (http://www.fixmystreet.com), followed by an email to the Town Council office. Building a clear record of incidents can help support requests to Oxfordshire County Council for improvements. As a reminder, responsibility for footpaths sits with Oxfordshire County Council, not the Town Council.

There were further concerns raised around resident parking permits, particularly in areas experiencing overdevelopment. This is another matter that would need to be investigated by Oxfordshire County Council.

Thank you again to everyone who came along, and to all councillors for their time and contributions.

Wallingford Town Council is here to represent and work for you. If you have something you would like to raise, please contact us directly by calling the office, emailing, or popping in to speak with us.

Mayor’s Sunday 2026 – A Wallingford Tradition

Join us in the Market Place for Mayor’s Sunday, the annual and long-standing tradition marking the inauguration of the Mayor of Wallingford for 2026/2027.

Sunday 17 May 2026

This historic civic ceremony is an important part of the town’s heritage, bringing the community together each year to mark the start of a new mayoral term.

To allow the service to take place safely, the Market Place will be closed to traffic between approximately 11:00am and 1:00pm. We kindly ask residents in the surrounding area for their co-operation during this time.

All are very welcome to attend and be part of this special occasion.

For further details, please email [email protected] or call 01491 835373.

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils are currently reviewing their off-street parking arrangements, and some of the proposed changes will affect car parks in Wallingford.

One of the main proposals is to move to a ticketless system across all council-run car parks. This would mean no need to display a paper ticket, but drivers would still need to enter their full vehicle registration at the machine to claim the free one-hour period or pay for longer stays. Payment options would include coins, contactless (including Apple Pay and Google Pay), or PayByPhone.

For Wallingford specifically, there are proposals to bring the charging arrangements at Castle Street and St George’s Road car parks in line with other council car parks in the town.

This is a consultation being run by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils. If you regularly use these car parks, it’s worth taking a look at the proposals and sharing your views.

Summer is on the way, and South Oxfordshire District Council are busy preparing Riverside Park and Pools for the season ahead 🌞

The pool and splash pad are set to reopen on Saturday 23 May, just in time for half term, with activities including aqua aerobics, swimming lessons and the return of swim for dogs later in the season.

The campsite opens earlier on Friday 1 May, with pitches already being booked for what’s always a popular spot.

Last year saw over 22,000 visitors enjoy the site, and further accessibility improvements have been made to help ensure it’s welcoming for everyone.

Keep an eye on Better UK website and Riverside’s page for booking details, which will open a week before launch.

Could you take part in the Big River Watch this weekend?
The Rivers Trust is running the Big River Watch from 24-30 April. A bit like the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in January, this requires you to download an app, watch a stretch of river for 15 minutes and answer survey questions on what you can see. As we know from programmes like Channel 4’s Dirty Business https://orlo.uk/0Kbug our rivers are far from healthy. To restore them, organisations like the Rivers Trust need more information about what they are like today. To take part in the Big River Watch go to the website https://orlo.uk/xkOoX
