Leather Museum Decision
After months of campaigning, public protest and determined questioning, Walsall Council’s Cabinet has formally agreed that Walsall Leather Museum will remain at its historic home on Littleton Street West.
The decision, taken on 22 July 2026 by the Reform UK Party - Walsall led Council, revokes the previous Walsall Conservatives Cabinet decisions to relocate the museum. It is a major victory for the campaigners, leather workers, residents and heritage supporters who refused to accept that one of Walsall’s most important cultural assets should be removed from the place where its history belongs.
This footage shows the relevant section of the Cabinet meeting, including the discussion and formal approval of the proposal.
The campaign has demonstrated what can happen when local people organise, investigate, ask difficult questions and refuse to be ignored. Particular credit must go to Lauren Broxton, Linda Boyes and everyone who marched, protested, attended meetings, submitted questions, shared information and kept the museum in the public eye.
There are still important questions to answer about the handling and cost of the abandoned relocation scheme, the future of the building purchased for it, and the timetable and investment required to reopen the museum properly. But for now, this is a moment to celebrate:
Walsall Leather Museum is staying where it belongs.
