Walsall Archives

Walsall Archives Walsall Archives Service is the Borough Record Office and Local Studies Library for Walsall Metropolitan Borough.
(1)

Walsall Archives Service is located in the Lichfield Street Hub, along with Walsall Central Library. Run by Walsall Council as part of Libraries & Heritage, it houses historical resources and family history material for all of Walsall Metropolitan Borough as well as some indexes for the whole of England and Wales. Appointments to view material can be made by email or telephone. It is not, however,

a museum and does not collect or display objects. For this, we highly recommend our colleagues Walsall Leather Museum, also on Facebook.

The first selection show a variety of different images from the railways and canals of the borough and beyond. To access our public portal please click on the following link - https://walsall.access.preservica.com/portal
There are more images being added weekly so please keep checking back and seeing what else has been made available.

South Asian History Month - July 2026
We have a display in central library showing the development of the Mandir Baba Balak Nath in Caldmore, Walsall founded in 1983. It is the first temple outside of India in the tradition of Sidh Shri Baba Balak Nath. These are part of a collection of photographs and other ephemera within Walsall Archives kindly donated by Mahant Shri Shri Jaspal Bhatti Ji. His granddaughter, Laxmi D, helped us organise the collection and provided the biographies of Mahant Shri Shri Jaspal Bhatti Ji and Mata Ji Shri Dalvir Bhatti Ji as well as descriptions for the images.

To mark Pride Month we have partnered with the library to create a display around the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE), most active during the 1970's. The display includes a brief history and sample pages from the minutes of the Walsall CHE although the full documents can be read by making an appointment to view them at Walsall Archives due to copyright restrictions.

The CHE minutes that we hold are copies of originals kept in the Hall-Carpenter Archives (HCA), London School of Economics Library, HCA/CHE/7/141.
