Breastfeeding in Hot Weather β˜€οΈ

When the weather is warm, your baby may want to breastfeed more often, but for shorter periods. This is completely normal and helps them stay hydrated. πŸ’™

🀱 Breast milk is all your baby needs

For babies who are exclusively breastfed, there is no need to give extra water even in hot weather. Breast milk provides both food and fluid and naturally adapts to meet your baby’s hydration needs.

πŸ‘Ά What you might notice;
βœ… More frequent feeds
βœ… Shorter feeding sessions
βœ… A little more fussiness than usual

πŸ‘‰ These are all perfectly normal!

πŸ’§ Remember to look after yourself too!

Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking regularly throughout the day, especially when feeding your baby.

🌑️ Keep an eye on wet nappies
Your baby should continue to have plenty of wet nappies.

πŸ‘‰ Seek advice from a healthcare professional if your baby is:
β€’ Unusually sleepy
β€’ Difficult to wake for feeds
β€’ Producing fewer wet nappies

πŸ’• Follow your baby’s lead

Feed responsively and offer the breast whenever your baby shows cues.

Remember: you cannot overfeed a breastfed baby!

🌞 Heatwave Reminder – Keeping Safe in the Hot Weather 🌞
This week, Walsall is set to experience a heatwave. While we will continue to deliver our services as normal, we would like to remind all families to follow public health guidance when accessing our sessions.
Our Stay and Play sessions offer free-flow play, which means our outdoor areas will be open to help keep spaces well ventilated. If you are planning to join us, please only travel if it is safe to do so.
To help everyone stay safe and enjoy the summer fun, please remember to:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated – bring plenty of water or drinks for both you and your child.
🧒 Protect against the sun – ensure your child wears a sun hat and appropriate clothing.
🧴 Apply sunscreen before attending and reapply as needed throughout the day.
🌳 Seek shade where possible, especially during the hottest part of the day.
πŸ‘Ά Keep babies safe in hot weather – never cover a pram with a blanket, keep babies cool, and follow safer sleep guidance.
For more information on keeping babies safe during hot weather, please visit:

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe while enjoying our summer activities. We look forward to seeing you if it is safe for you to attend! β˜€οΈπŸ˜Š

With very hot weather forecast this week, it’s important to take care and look after those around you.

Temperatures are set to rise further on Wednesday and Thursday, with a Red Heat Health Alert in place on those days – meaning severe impacts are likely and there is an increased risk to health, especially for those most vulnerable.

High temperatures pose a risk to health, particularly for older adults, young children and individuals with long-term health conditions, who may need extra support to stay cool.

Here are a few top tips to :

🏠 Stay cool indoors. Close curtains on rooms that face the sun, but also remember that it may be cooler outdoors than indoors.

πŸ’§ If you're heading outdoors, take bottled water, drink fluids regularly, apply sunscreen often, and shield yourself from the sun during the hottest hours (11am to 3pm).

πŸ“± Check in on family, friends and neighbours if they need support.

🌑️ Feeling unwell? Dizzy? Unquenchable thirst? Move to a cool spot and hydrate yourself. NHS 111 is here to offer advice if needed. In an emergency, dial 999.

πŸ§’ If you have young children, make sure they are protected from heat as they are more likely to become unwell from hot weather.

🌊 Take care around open water – on hot days it can be tempting to cool off, but please stay mindful and look after yourself and others around open water.
